Mike...

The H31 interior is similar to the of my H34. The ac unit on my boat is located under the aft dinette seat and part of the galley sink cabinet. I've attached a pic for reference. It's a 12,000 BTU unit and works quite well on our hot Bay summer days. The installation was not very well done by a previous owner and I have yet to find the time to correct its positioning. The white thing you see is the old water heater, since replaced by a Force 10. The next size down (8k) may be too small for the H31's spacious interior. Look at Mermaids for compactness and ease of installation.

Others have put the ac unit under the nav station or the V-berth. You might try searching the archives to find what these installations look like.

Re: thx dan

Mike,

I added a 6K mermaid to my 85 H31 (since traded in). I don't have any pictures but I can tell you what I did with mine. I installed it under the aft dinette seat as Dan mentioned. One problem I had was that the unit wouldn't quite slide under the dinette seat. I tried removing as much of the dinette seat that I needed to install it but it was sucn a pita that I just cut a hole in the top of the dinette seat..the reset for low coolent flow shutdown was on the top of the unit also so I had to have access..(this would probably be different on other brands).
I installed the water pump under the sink in the head. I used the waste discharge thruhull for the A/C water pump intake (since it is against the law in the great lakes to discharge waste into the lake anyway) and plumbed the water discharge into the sink drain low enough so that it discharged out the sink drain thruhull and didn't back up into the sink.. I know there are much better ways of doing this if you have the time but working on the boat during winter months didn't give many days that I wanted to spend inside a cold cabin.(I'm also 6'1 and 240 lbs so it is a lilttle tough getting into tight spaces).
For the water lines, I drilled a hole in the dinette seat that was covered by the cushions so that it was basically out of sight. The lines were routed along the same path as the electrical wiring to the head.
I built a platform under the dinette seat and just let the A/C discharge blow out from under the seat. It was enough to cool the cabin down by augmenting the a/c with a fan to keep comfortable during the few 90+ degree days we had. Not the best way to install it I know, but the boat sold within two weeks after being on the market so I guess it wasn't that bad.
