Adding Air conditioning to a 38 ft 2006 Hunter

We own a 2006 38 foot Hunter. We would like to add air conditioning. The electrical panel has the space and the boat appears to have an area to put the air conditioning. Has anyone had experience with adding air conditioning that was not factory installed?

I would be surprised if any 2006 Hunter had factory A/C. This is typically a dealer installed “commissioning” task. It is also a job for a skilled pro. There are install standards that must be followed to assure trouble-free operation. Electrical, plumbing, through-hulls, controls, condensate management. I recommend you research and consult with a competent air conditioning tradesman. This is not a job for a jackleg contractor or do-it-yourselfer.

Our 2008 that we purchased new as a dealer demo in 2009 came with factory air conditioning.
Actually 2 units. One in the main cabin under the settee at the forward end of the table and the second smaller unit under the berth in the aft cabin. There is one cooling water circulation pump that serves both units. Each has its own through hull discharge and its own control panel.

Much of what you will have to deal with depends on what wiring and duct work was installed during construction. We found there were many cases in which Hunter did some pre wiring, pre installing and pre plumbing of stuff for options.

For example we saw boats without air conditioning where Hunter had installed the duct work in the ceiling during construction. That would make installation a whole lot easier than if you have no duct work.
We also found ours was pre wired for TV in the aft, main, and forward cabin. And the wiring and hose was run for a high water energy back up bilge pump. So depending on what your boat has the size of the job to install air could go range in scope.

I installed Aircon on my 2002 h326 myself. Easy job. My friend's 2007 h33 came with Aircon from Hunter factory.

You could most likely go on here to get info how the install goes and info to show wiring
and ducting, you are looking at I think a big $$$ with the 2 unit systems.
You will need to add 2 shore power plugs next to the normal plus among other electrical
wiring and duct work.
Try asking other H-38 with AC to make photo copy from their manual book of the related AC
in there book,my Hunter book has all info of all my equipment on my boat H-36.
Maybe install one system at a time.

Actually my 2 unit system runs off one shore input. The rest of the boat runs off the second input. A third isn’t necessary. I have at times used a splitter and run the entire boat off on 30amp chord. I know it’s not preferred but it will work as long as you don’t try to run air conditioning, water heater, microwave and a hair dryer all at the same time.
In home port I run two 30 amp chords to run things.

Yes sorry about saying need 3 shore power and was not thinking
and guess because have seen 3 plugs on bigger boats.
I never use more than one plug and on my H-36 I have Parallel breaker that I just use for AC and as said is only 30 amps and must make sure don’t use any high draw like water heater and been doing this since new.

You may be seeing what I have. There are 3 of the plug covers on the boat. The third one Contains the connections for cable and telephone.

I just assumed all for shore power but I wonder I have 2 shore power plugs and one is for just the AC side of panel in my boat but boats must have 50 amp so you can run both AC.
My RV starts out 50 amp so when at campground with 50 amp plugin I can run both AC and than my cords drop down to 30amp and than I need to run one AC and low draw appliances.
