i like to sail my 1984 h27 here in tampa bay when the wind speed exceeds 25 knots. with a partially rolled up genao or reefed main only , i hate the way the boat performs. it's just begging for a double reefed main with a small staysail and no jib. has anyone made the conversion? i think this would really add to my enjoyment of windy weather sailing, but it's alot of work and money if it doesn't really balance out. thanks for your thoughts. dan

staysail

Dan, I am currently dealing with the same scenario on my Catalina 30 TRBS. My sail repair lady suggested a 110% - 120% used sail. With a single track furler you are still having to change sails. I picked up a 111% rated used sail from WWW.Baconsails.com in Annapolis for $225.00 Only needs a couple of patches and re-working the leach line. You can go on their site and list you r boat and type of sail you are looking for and it will give you everything in stock and how it would fit your boat.

Are you sure you are not loading your mast

with a force that it was not designed for? If the mast has a load on it lower than the design, it may cause the mast to fail. Hunter is still in business. I would run it by them. r.w.landau

cutter thoughts

I own a cutter on tampa bay. most sailing days you just dont need it. and when you dont its really in the way. If you add one you will wish you had running back stays to keep the luff tight so thats more gear. Im not sure of the condition of your sails but. if they are a bit old and full that may be a bigger part of the problem. if the main and or jib can not be flattened out you just have too much draft in the sail to make it sail well. have a sailmaker look at your sails. If you do put up a staysail it will cripple your ability to tack the genoa. the forward triangle gets is blocked up with gear. for the few days we get 25 knot winds i dont think it would be worth converting to a cutter rig. if fact im looking at taking mine out!
