I have a 1990 Hunter 23 which I would like to ad a spinnaker to. Currently I have only a jib which I have to Hank onto the forestay with the halyard running into the mast and down. There is only the one shieve for that halyard. I could use the the same shieve for the spinnaker. Or would it be better to ad another shieve to run both the jib and the spinnaker through. Of course not to be using at the same time. On my new spinnaker I also have a sock to aid in dousing. My first goal is to try to get this set up correctly and then the next will be to try to master the use of the spinnaker. If there are any suggestions on how to accomplish I hope that you will let me know.

You should ....

...NEVER use your jib halyard for a spinnaker. Spinnaker halyards need to be above the headstay on the mast. All jib halyards are below the headsatay. You should mount a bail on the mast above the headstay and lead the halyard internally down the mast. Where the halyard enters the mast is at least a foot down (could be more). A spinnaker with a sock requires that you launch and douce from the foredeck, therefore there is no advantage to leading the halyard to the cockpit.

Try this...

Here’s an easy-to-make bowsprit, seats in the anchor locker. This will throw the spin ahead of the main, less blanketing. Tack line and 2 sheets permanently deployed for quick setup. (Note that the link here has 2 pages of pix and directions.) http://www.sailboatowners.com/bowsprit.doc
