We want to add a second 12v on our 87 Hunter 28.5. The location of the first is under the galley sink, but a quick look suggests there is not room there for a second. How have my Hunter-owning brothers solved this? Your help and advice, as always, is genuinely appreciated.

I too, have a battery under the sink. I've got a second Group 24 12vdc battery installed on the shelf under the 2-burner Origo. Works well in that location.

Like Warren I added a 2nd group 27 under the stove. Both my 27s are paralleled as a house/use bank. I also installed a small garden tractor style battery in the storage space just forward of the galley. This is strictly for emergency starting in case I draw the house/use bank too low. Both banks are charged using a single circuit from my 3 stage charger. I installed an ACR between the banks that keep them isolated during discharging. This setup eliminates worries about the 1-2-both switch, all I use is off and 1 and the ACR takes care of the rest. All monitored by a Xantrex LinkLITE monitor. System works excellent! I also incorporated a 1000w inverter for those rare times I need/want AC. Runs my little microwave nicely.

the previous owner of my 28.5 moved both batteries to underneath the starboard hatch/seat near the nav. conceal and just drilled a hole in the engine compartment wall to get the power to the motor

I have the factory installed group 24 under the galley sink. I also have a group 27 installed against the forward bulkhead inside of the starboard lazarette (underneath the coolant overflow reservoir/wooden step).

Power source/charging destination is controlled by a 1/2/Both/Off switch.
