I needed to add a rope clutch to my H35. I did something really stupid...drilled into what I thought was an accessible area. It wasn't. I need advice...read on for details. The H35 came equipped with 4 rope clutches atop the deck, accessible from the cockpit. I added a spinnaker halyard, which demanded a new clutch installation. When I drilled I noted some metal filings in addition to the fibreglass. Ignorantly paid no attention. Found I couldn't access the hole from inside cabin. I suspect the filings indicate an embedded plate, to which the oem clutches are attached. Any H35 owners out there have a solution for me? Rich (humble in Annapolis)

If you havn't drilled the hole to big you can tap a thread. If it is to big, W/M has inserts that screw in a larger hole with a threaded inner hole.

What I ended up doing
Hey Rich, I was adding the same to my 1992 35.5 legend and what I did was to drill through the coach roof and through the headliner for the Head area directly below the installation spot for the clutch. I bored out the headliner which is a fiberrglass material to 5/8 inch. this gave me space to attach a washer as nylon lock nut for the clutch bolt between the headliner and the underside of the coach roof (there is a small space there. I then went to Lowes home inprovement and bought a couple of plastic 5/8 inch plugs that just snap into place to cover the holes. This makes the clutch quite secure, gives me access in the future, and is asthetically not bad. In your case you would have to drill through the existing mounting plate that you hit. I am not familiar with your boat configuration but maybe one of these thoughts above is applicable. Alex

Rope clutch - another solution
I added a 4th rope clutch port & starboard to the builder supplied triples without drilling holes. The triple clutches on my '90 Legend 35.5 are built by Garhauer, who sold me two singles that match the size and configuration of the existing clutches. They also supplied the SS bolts and nuts which connect the new singles to the existing triples. These bolts are obviously longer then the ones holding the triples together in order to accomodate the greater width of adding a fourth. Installation is very easy. Remove the existing bolts and the face plate on the side of the triple where you want to add the fourth (mine were outboard). Secure the new single to the existing triple with the new bolts. Done! NB: The deck organizer had a 4th un-used sheave which further simplified the process. If yours does not have the extra sheave you will have to address that issue seperately.

Stbd: Masthead spinnaker halyard, Main halyard, Fractional spinnaker halyard, Stbd genoa halyard. Note: most boats don't have a masthead spinnaker halyard so you can use that stopper for your reef control line or second frac spinnaker hallyard. A second spinnaker halyard is needed for spinnaker peels.
