Hi everyone, I am considering adding a dodger to my 25, and am looking for suggestions and experiences from others whop may have done so. Are there any good companies out there that you would suggest? What about pricing? -Paul

About five years ago I purchased a self-installed dodger from Island Nautical. I bought it through Defender Catalogue. This turned out to be a less than satisfactory experience. If I were to do it again I'd go direct to Island Nautical and deal with them and not through another catalogue. Island Nautical (Indodger) has hundreds of patterns for all kinds of boats. and the one I ordered fit fairly well for a self-installed project. They have an 800 number for tech support if you have any questions or problems during installation and they were very resposive to my questions at the time. The dodger came with all of the snaps, fittings and screws. There was even a set of nylon bases cut to the correct angle where the frame bolted to the deck. I had to buy some eye straps and some sealant for the screws; but that was it. As I said this was about five years ago and the price then was around $800 for an O'day 28. I was able to install it in a day and it looked quite good when completed. It is due to be restitched at this time so I am replaceing it with a full enclosure this year. If anyone out there is interested in a used dodger for an O'dy 28 which needs some restitching I will let it go for $100 plus shipping. Happy hunting I think that Island Nautical has a web site. Mike

Thanks Mike, The prices seem to have gone up with inflation. I am surprised how much a simple fixture like a dodger costs! Over $1100 now! Are they really worth that much in comfort and value? If anyone has a dodger for an O'day 25 that they would like to part with for a reasonable cost, please let me know! Paul

Consider a Bimini
I'm thinking about putting a bimini top on my O'Day 25. They are much less money since they are more universal in fit. A bimini may also give better coverage, anybody have an opinion on that? Check ebay or West Marine, they're about $400.

I believe that the dodger added comfort to the boat comensurate with it's cost. Some sailors feel that anything other than a fully open boat with no relief of any sort from the weather isn't true sailing. It gets down to what you are willing to endure, weather-wise. The dodger offers a bit of shade, keeps spray and splashes off the crew sitting directly behind it and the hatch can be left open on a rainy day (light rain that is). As far as a bimini goes: Well as I said in my original post I am going for a full enclosure this year. Expensive? Very! But I sail the Great Lakes where bugs abound and chilly days are often lengthy and accompanied by wind driven precip. Also on a long passage on a blazing hot day it's good to be able to get some relief from the sun. Finally the full enclosure is like adding another room. Combined with a folding cockpit table meals (for two or three) can be served in the cockpit no matter the weather, cushions and other weather sensitive stuff can be left in the cockpit. All in all the more comfort you add to the boat the more SWMBO will be a happy partner. SWMBO=She Who Must Be Obeyed. Enjoy your summer of '06 no matter what. Mike
