If anyone has added a/c to an older C-30 I would appreciate any tips, recommendations or warnings to make life easier.

Thanks, Keith Harris

I put a 12,000 BTU in my Hunter 31, so I would think that would do for your C30.

Decide which brand you want, then go on line and get the install manual, read and reread it, before purchasing and installing. Decide where you want to install it, etc, then purchase the unit.

Not sure what type you're interested in, but I recently went online and purchased a "floor model" ac (only) unit (6700btu) that runs off shore power only and exhausts both hot air and moisture (no drip pan) from the cabin of my C30. It's mounted beside the companionway steps and mostly out of the way, altho quarterberth access is a little less convenient. Chose to make-up a new lower hatch board with a 5.25" circular hole for the exhaust tube. Delivered price was a bit over $300. Works well in 90+ heat in East Carolina. If interested I can dig up the site and spec info.

I have a 77 Catalina 30. The PO installed a Mermaid brand A/C with heat option. It is a 115 shore power unit and works well. It has a thru hull fittng for water intake to cool the condenser, and an above water line thru hull for condensate and cooling water discharge. It includes water pump to draw in the cooling water from the lake. The unit is mounted directly below the V berth and is readly accessable. One caution......you must close the water intake thru hull when not using the A/c or water CAN siphon in and flood the boat thr the intake pump. It does cool the cabin with 4 ducted ports placed at your choosing. It does provide sufficient cooling even in 80 degree plus outside temp. Good luck with your project.

I installed the ocean breeze 16,700 in my 79 Cat 30'. I installed it in the port lazarette. (under my v berth is occupied with hot water heater) I used the 3/4 inch sea cock under the aft quarter berth for water intake and installed a 1/2 inch seacock right at the waterline stripe outside of the port lazarette for the exhaust water. I also installed the mermaid condensation venturi to handle the condensation.

I mounted the pump under the nav station. I wanted easy access to this because often after a hard sail I have to bleed the pump due to air in the lines.

I ran 3 ducts: one comes out of the aft bulkhead in the galley, one out of the side of the nav station and one out of the forward closet into the v berth.

It will cool the boat to about 74 in the day in florida 95-100dgr weather. It will get down to the low 60's at night.

It is a big project. Took me about 2 weekends to finish the job completely working alone.
