Look up Bimini's in the archives.

Look up biminis in the archives and see what other have said. You should be able to stand under it. You should be able to see you main sail trim (needs a window) It should go aft as far as possible to maximize the shade. (so you will need slits in the cover to go around the back stay) Stainless steel frames are best. (stronger) You should do it as soon as possible(so you don't say, we should have done this sooner)

Oh God yes.

Use SS nuts and bolts and a good marine calk.....or else! Imodified one for 22 use from BoatUS.

How far aft

is really the question. I have a 23.5 with stern rail seats which cannot be used when the bimini is up as it comes too much to the rear. The seats cannot be occupied as the bimini is too low. If it were any higher it would interfere with the boom. This may not be a problem on the 26 but you may want to check it out.

Sliders

Hi Mary, You can mount the bimini on slider tracks that will allow you to move the top fore and aft. Please see my post re To Modify My 26.5.......above. A bimini is absolutely vital equipment for family sailing and cruising! Because of the design of some boats, some compromises may have to be made but as already suggested, just make sure you have standing room and gives coverage to the aft part of the cockpit when sailing.
