I am looking to buy a 1994 Beneteau 351 that does not have jib sheet winches in the cockpit making it difficult to singlehand. Does anyone have any experience adding a winches on this model?

Keep in mind that your bolt hole alignment will be different than mine and you may have to adjust the width of the bracket when using the Harkin 44 as compared with the 40's that I used.

Good luck

Thanks! I am assuming yours are working fine? When I point it out to people that our boat only has two winches they're a little dumb struck and start looking around the boat like maybe I haven't done that before.

Great!

Thanks :) we bought a 351 1995 last fall and this summer, we realize the same thing about the missing winches... I have another question, about installing a second jib sail like a 110% or 100%. Anyone did this on that boat? Maybe I should post a new trend for this one... ;)

Yes. It makes singlehandling a breeze. I have an autopilot but when I Tack or Jibe I don't use it anymore;well, as much.

The other thing I did, was to use the existing genoa cars. The problem with using just the snatch block is the genoa sheet rubbed against the life line with the sail deployed.

Ideally it would be nice to replace the cars with ones that have more sideward movement. see attached picture.

So let me get this right, you run your jib sheets directly back to the aft positioned winches without an intervening block?

Not Quite.

The Sheet runs from the Genoa thru the car, then thru a snatch block (located on the toe rail) and up to the winch.

I found that under sail, the Genoa sits outboard of the life lines if I only use the snatch block. This made the sheet rub against the life line while sailing. Also the slot between the Main and Genoa was wider than when using the car.

It works well but it would be nice if the car swiveled sideways more. I'm not going to change the cars unless I can find a used pair for a cheap price.

Hope my description helps.
