I have recently bought a 1979 O'Day 25 with a non-functional 9.9 Johnson 25" extra long shaft that isn't worth fixing. I now have on order a 4 stroke 8 hp Yamaha wityh a 25" shaft, electric start and power tilt. Last night I read some of the Owner's comments and noted that 78 models, possibly others, had to rebuild their transoms when they added similar O/Bs. I have not been able to find the email addresses for those particular owners and am not sure that the problem was peculiar to 78 models. I have read the recent forum notice from Kevin and responses recommending removing the wedge nd adding a larger bracket designed for a 4 stgroke. Can those owners who had to make a major reinfosrcing change to their transom please provide guidance or will the larger bracket, with the wedge removed be sufficient? When they had troubles did the transom develop stress cracks or rupture? Should I mount a new motor bracket in the same pad location as the original, which is apparently an OMC gas cylinder assist bracket? I note that the $400 Fulton bracket (West catalogue) has much larger travel. Is this necessary for the 25? Thanks much

78 25 - replacing the OB
I am replacing a 78 9.9 2 cycle with a 9.9 Yamaha 4 stroke - I was wanting to go with a extra long shaft - but my dealer told me this week that he cannot locate an extra long shaft - thus I will go with a long shaft - high thrust model The issue is the bracket - I will need a 4 stroke bracket - which do have a larger footprint then the existing 2 cycle bracket - thus - off comes the wedge! - I have been assured by my dealer - mechanic - that new bracket (cost of $400 - I was expecting $275 range - MO MONEY MO MONEY!) will allow the motor to be lowered to a proper position - so it won't - I believe the word is capitate - What will need to be done is the old bracket off - the wedge off - fill the old holes - drill new holes - (considering drilling larger holes - filing them and then drill the right size holes - and then backing plates on both sided - I am considering a plywood backing backing 1/2 inch with a steel plate on the outside - I am not certain whether the backing should be one piece = or some other configuration of pieces - That is where I am at with it right now - meeting with my mechanic dealer on Friday to go over the particulars - I guess we can co-miserate on the forum! On a side note - just had my bottom sanded (I asked him to sand - but I believe he did do some sandblasting - SOBs) - and then put on a new barrier coats and anti-fouling - you have a model close in years - how has your luck been with your hull - any blisters?

OB Motor Mounting

I am not sure if we will have to remove the wedge and add plating, but I'll let you know. It seems the issue with mounting the motor is being able to set it far enough down in the water so it doesn't cavitate (come out of the water while running) and be able to lift it out when under sail. The key is "vertical travel" of the bracket and the size of the shaft. In my case I also need assistance lifting my 75lb. Honda 7.5 so that is why I am looking at the PowerTran.

I am removing a sail drive from my Tanzer 26 bought last fall, and installing a Honda 15 extra-long-shaft. This weighs 110 lbs. (Same as the Honda 9.9 xlong). I bought a Garelick EEz-In for about $200 and mounted it (temporarily, for expermentation)on my motor stand. The bracket is spring loaded, and the OB goes up and down with little effort. I also have measured just how far up and down it moves, so I'll know where to mount the bracket. BTW I qualify for this forum as the owner of an Oday 20 -- which is on a nearby lake. Great boat.

...getting Garelick item #71045. These are a pair of anondized adjustable angle brackets that your mount bolts to. The brackets can be used with any angle transom, and keep the motor mount perpendicular to the water. if you go to the www.boatfix.com site and look for that part number you'll find they are about $50, and replace the function of the wedge. Or, search on the www.garelick.com site. Moreover, the mounting bolts thru the transom will be spaced father apart (same as the motor mount spacing) than the wedge mount, giving better weight distribution. I ordered a pair the other day and am awaiting them. What I plan to do is bolt the adapter angle thru 1/2 inch starboard on the transom outside, thru the transom, then thru another piece of starboard inside the transom. Then bolt the mount to the angle adapters. This is going to be many fold stronger than the wedge affair the boat came with.

Angle Brackets
The Garelick adjustable angle bracket "Fits Models 71040, 71041, 71042 and 71057. " These are the Garelick aluminum motor bracket models. Unfortunately they don't make an adjustable angle bracket for the 71090, which is what I need for my 75lb 4-stroke. Hope this new mount works for me with the wedge.

...another boat just like mine. He has what looks to be a "Garelick 71091" mount affixed to the angle brackets. Since the two brackets aren't attached to one-another, they should accomodate any width mounting plate. In fact, on the boat I saw, he never bothered to remove the wedge, just affixed the brackets on either side of the wedge. To confuse matters, I have a Fulton mount that I'm going to use with the Garelick brackets..... In any case, I'll see if this is doable once they come in. If it doesn't work, I'll be sure to let everyone know after the cussin' is done.

I checked further and find that there are, based on what is available locally, the Garelick 71090, which I bought from Boater's Worl;d for $249.50.), the bigger model, the 71091, which is over i/2 as much again, and the Fulton 1820, also $250. locally. However. when I got down to the boat to install it I see that there is no way to get to the inside surface of my transom to take off the nuts of the current unit.. Best I can see is to cut a 6" deck hole for an access plate on the rear vertical suarface of the outboard motor tank compartment. It appears that they bolted on the original bracket before they dropped in the deck and cockpit unit! Anybody , please, tell me that I'm stupid and missed something and make my day. Charlie

I also had to replace my motor bracket to accomadate the new Honda 9.9. Since the wedge was permanently attached to the transom, I cut a plywood square (3/8"), West System'd it, and mounted it to the bracket. That gave me a wide enough base for the Garelick motor bracket. But even after mounting the bracket as low as I could, I still did not get the engine low enough to cover the cavitation plate, so I cut off about 1 1/2 inches of the mount itself and it now works great
