Just download AC companion on my ipad. Looks great and can't wait to try it out on the water. Thanks

What is the current version of AC for Android? Google Play has version 1.04.

v1.04 is the current version in the Google Play store. There's a beta version here that automatically uploads your location to your electronic boat card if you allow it:
https://activecaptain.com/companion/beta.php

If you have automatic updates for Google Play, installing the beta will have it overwritten when Google Play senses you don't have their current version. That's really poorly done by them and you have to watch out for it.

Looks like I was wrong about some of my Navionics comments..

Just read and confirmed that the app now includes only one year of updates. Then it's 24.99 a year to stay current. Not sure why I can still delete and download after a year but maybe they "grandfathered" people who had the app before they changed this.

Anyway - sorry for the misinformation. I stand (sit actually) corrected :)

With map updates costing relatively the same, the AC integration with Garmin makes it a better deal.

added: Why didn't you combine eBoatCard with ActiveCaptain registration?

added: Downloaded and the charts are unusable. Must be an Android thing. Uninstalled. How do I remove my info from eBoatCard and deactivate my account on ActiveCaptain?

To the OP's initial question, an Ipad is especially useful if the only chartplotter is at the helm as it allows someone other than the helmman to help with navigation.

Typically the helmsman needs to adjust the zoom on the chartplotter for steering duties - instruments, AIS, radar, course, route, nearby buoys and hazards. Having someone panning or zooming the chartplotter is distracting if not dangerous.

Our Ipad lives below on the chart table were navigation is supposed to happen. No need for a case as it is dry. I picked Garmin Blue Chart a few years ago because my wife found it quite intuitive. I thought it did the best job at the time of ActiveCaptain display (fast, background update, good fonts, etc).

I ignore the Garmin update reminder as I see no reason to update the charts very often as it is not the primary navigation system -- and postings on ActiveCaptain would likely tell you of a change quicker than any chart company update.
