We have an older Achillies dingy that never had an outboard. Wondering if anyone has experience with the Honda 2hp 4 cycle 15" shaft, as a likly outboard, under average water conditions, for the Achillies? Thanks. Frank

What size dinghy?

I don't know what size or type your dingy is but unless you're just dingying out to your boat on a mooring 2 hp is a bit underpowered. It all depends on how you intend to use the dink.

hp

My thought is 4 hp. Have a 9' older rubber boat and it is barely enough with two people.

If you the Honda 2 be careful

The air cold engine vibrates a lot. The oil cap comes lose and falls off. Tighten it real real good!

2HP is fine for a launch.

I have a 9' slat floor inflatable with an old 2HP Johnson. It's fine. 2 adults + 2 coolers + boat bags + wind and still don't need to go past 1/2 throtle to get out to the mooring. However if I was going to depend on it for any longer distance that I would have to deal with rougher conditions, I'd probably look for something bigger.

2hp not good

Most engines this small don't have neutral or reverse; you spin the engine around for reverse and shut it off to stop, and its a pain to use. The 3.3hp will make your life much easier.

It all depends

sa- ...on where you want to go, how fast you want to go, how long you can put up with taking it longer than your neighbors, how much you like being out on the water, how much patience you have... We had a 1.2 HP one-speed Johnson on our WMP 8.4 dinghy for MANY years and loved it for even long trips, trips that were long enough to warrant bringing along a 1 gallon refill jug of gas (just to get to the fuel dock and get fuel and ice). Now we have a 9.9 hp on a 10.2 Zodiac. Love that too. Your boat, your choice. Good luck. Stu

Good information/experiences; thanks to all.

Appreciate the scope of response and take it to heart and the marine store. Frank

Watch that mount

Don't know how old your Achilles is or what model. But we had the LT-2 with a Cruise'n'Carry 2.7. The multi-piece wooden mount was attached to the dink with straps and held together with screws and nuts. The fasteners were not stainless. One day mount and engine broke away from the dink and sank into the deep. (Always carry oars.) The non-stainless fasteners had corroded through. Achilles bought me a new engine after I pointed out that there seemed to have been a design change on the mount that would make such a disaster impossible, i.e., mine was not the only one. Check the mount.
