We're being distracted/annoyed by the 'water hammer' of the water pump pressurizing the plumbing system

The accumulator

An accumulator is used primarily for two reasons, the first is to take the shock out of the system the second is to store fluid under pressure. Accumulators use either a bladder or a piston to devide two chambers. One side of the chamber is plumbed into the fluid the other is pressurized with air or nitrogen. The idea is that the fluid, which cannot be compressed. moves the piston or stretches the diaphram to compress the gas thus absorbing loads just as the shock on your car would. When you turn off your faucet the fluid stays pressurized by the accumulator thus providing reserve pressure when you use your faucet again. You should apply small gas pressure to preload the daphram or piston, but never more than your water pump pressure can make. If you can, install a small pressure guage at the top of the accumulator. It will be a good tool to tell you the status of your water system and will help you detect leaks. Good luck JP

Worth it!

I bought the 1 gallon stainless from West Marine. My wife questioned why I would spend the money to install something like that on a new boat. I keep telling her that she would appreciate after it was in, but I took a lot of grief for $100 or so (more than the $4000 for electronics). Anyway, now that it is in and working fine, she brags about it and wonders why anyone would not use one. It was worth it.

Hammerin' water pump

Ted; An accumulator will not make your pump any quieter, and will actually run a couple of seconds after shutting off the faucet. It will keep it from pumping while filling an occaisional glass of water, or two. I think they do help smooth out the system by keeping the water pressure constant. Mike

Pumps

I installed a small (1qt.) shuflo tank. The instructions state to pressurize it w/ bike pump, up to the "turn off" pressure of the pump. I got that info from the pump paperwork. It works great and the pump runs less. Marc
