Has anyone installed an accumulator tank in their water pressure system? My galley pump kicks on everytime we use water and was wondering if a tank would help with less pump cycles. thanks Rob

Use Accumulator Tank on RV

I put an accumulator tank in my 5th wheel trailer for the same reason. It works well. One big advantage was that at night I can turn off the pump and, if I need water, the two gallons in the tank takes care of it. One thing that may or may not be a problem. With a tank, while the pump is building up the pressure, the pump runs under a heavy load for an extended period. After using it for several years, there have been no pump failures.

Pump cycles

I've installed a small tank made by sureflow, available at West. It has a rubber diaphram and is pressurised. The pump still runs every time the water is turned on, but it doesn't come on instantly. Water will run maybe 10 seconds before pump starts. It also maintains a more constant pressure, which is the reason I installed it. Its been working well now for 4 years.

not really

The pump must still cycle. the accumulator takes the surge out to make it work smoother and cushion the flow of water when you shut it off. this helps to reduce wear and tear on the pump and the fittings.

Size?

Everyone is (more or less) right. Obviously, the pump still has to run, and the total running time for a given amount of water usage will be the same. The difference is (with an accumulator): The bigger the tank, the less often (but longer) it will run. The 'tiny' little (24 oz.) tanks don't really do much. The 1 & 2 Gallon tanks make a significant difference, especially for "middle of the night head calls". The 5 Gallon tanks make a big difference. Regards, Gord

Tank size.

Thanks Guys..Ill be installing a 2 gallon Shurflo SS tank this fall,,,Im currently using a single 4.8gpm pump.......This is the largest tank i can fit in the space....im looking forward to not hearing the pump go on in the middle of the night...there are to many things that keep us up at night as it is..(what was that noise?) Thanks and happy sailing! Rob PS has anyone installed multipile pumps inline.1 in galley?? 1 down line in shower??..or is it better to just get a larger pump.

Shurflo Website

I have the Shurflo pump and accumulator on my boat. It is very quiet. Check out further details here:

Series Pumps

Don't install pumps in series. The second pump could end up pressurized on it's inlet - & it would'nt like that Gord

Accumulator tank lets you keep the pump off

and that's what you should be doing. Especially on a boat at a mooring like mine its good to keep all electrical circuits off unless they are needed. The tank lets you run the fresh water for short periods without having to turn the circuit on each time. Its also not a good idea to keep the pump circuit on all the time because a small leak will empty your tank, and possibly your battery, because the pump will continually try to maintain pressure as the water leaks or drips out.
