Accugage for Diesel

I've been looking at the Accugage Unit for diesel, waste and water tanks. I had thought that these guages did not require internal sending units for any of the tanks if they are all composite. But the chandlery page on this site seems to say that diesel tanks, either plastic or metal require a hole for an internal sending unit. I don't want to put a hole in my diesel tank. Does anyone know if I can use the foil sensor on a plastic diesel tank? Thanks. Laura Bertran 1985 H31, Rising Tide

They have two types.

Laura: There are two types. If you have a metal tank, they have one that you can use with a hole in the tank. If you have a plastic/composite tank then they attach to the exterior. The most difficult part of this installation is the wiring. You just stick some foil tape on the tank and attach the sending unit. Run the wires back to the display panel and hook up a power source.

I called them, and...

They said the external sensing devices were not accurate for diesel. They sell a float sensor (for about $50) for diesel tanks, which connects to the Acu-gage. Unfortunately, it requires a hole at the top of the tank. :^( ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

This must be something new.

Ed: This must be something new. There is a seperate type of sensor for diesel vs water or waste.

They said ...

For diesel tanks, it didn't matter what the tank was made of, the regular (supplied) sensoring devices were inaccurate for measuring diesel. The float devices work best, but require a hole. They make them in several lengths, so you need to tell them the depth of your tank. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

External sender won't work for diesel

Properly sealed, there's no reason to avoid cutting a hole in the top of the tank for an internal sender.

Diesel sender is not a float...

Cutting a Hole...

...will introduce unwanted particles into fuel tank, won't it? Is there some trick to this that someone can share? Thanks.

Particles of plastic.

Hopefully, the fuel filter(s) will trap any particles that get sucked into the fuel line, especially plastic particles large enough to see. I'd be more concerned with fuel leaking out when the boat is heeled. Good sealant and/or a gasket should take care of that problem. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Sensor

There are now two types of sensors that we manufacture. One external sensor for Water and Waste and in internal sensor for Diesel. Our internal sensor IS NOT A FLOAT. It uses the same principal as our outside sensor for water and waste. We did manufacture a external sensor for diesel but ever since HUNTER asked us for an internal rod to replace the one they were using we have decided to just make the one type sensor. There have been hundred of the exterior diesel sensors sold with no problems. There are in extreme cases that the reading won't go below 1/4 but this is correctable. Hunter has now used the in tank sensor for 2 years with NO PROBLEMS. We do not have problems with our units and stand 100% behind everything we manufacture. If you have a diesel external sensor and need to talk about it don't hesitate to get hold of me and I will be glad to help. Dennis Ferriello Dennis@snake-river.org

Diesel

Our external sensors had only a few minor problems and only in very isolated times. If you purchased an external sensor and have a ULTRA 8 unit there were NO problems. We decided that due to the fact that the sensor was on the side of the tank that the readings were not as accurate as we like since if the tank is on an angle leaning to the tape you might show a lot of fuel and not have much as all. Moving to the center of the tank with a rod with no moving parts solved the problem if a tank was leaning this was the best place to be to read the fuel. I hope this helps and if anyone needs any questions answered please get hold of me. Sometime things you hear are not exactly what they started out being. Thanks so much Dennis Snake River Electronics
