I have a 1979 Oday 23. Does anyone know how to get access to the stanchion bolts? The undersides of the stanchions are not visible inside the cabin and I cannot figure out how to hold the nuts in order to tighten the bolts. thanks.

they should be accessible from the cabin area

I'm in the process of rebedding the stanchions on my 272. You may have to peel back the head liner to find the backing plates and nuts, but they should (must!!) be accessible from below to maintain or replace them. On my 272 they are very close to the joint between the deck and topsides. Maybe someone who owns a 23 will offer a better explanation. Good luck, Tom Ehmke

Accessible

They are accessible from the cabin, you should reach up around the cabin top where they should be and feel around, as the other reply states, you may have to peel back the liner.

I used a hole cutting saw

I used a hole cutting saw to remove that part of the liner covering the nuts so I could not only rebed, but also add backing plates. I need a midget, though, to get to all of the bow pulpit bolts. marducci

cut opening

i have a 1978 oday. i cut access openings in the headliner and added 10" aluminum bars that ran with the length of the boat. I drilled holes to match the stanchions. I had to do fiberglass repair because the fiberglass had cracked because there was no support. I layed up 5 layers of fiberglass on a aluminum foil pad. I applied the fiberglass patch from below, dressed up the deck with gel coat and re-drilled. the foam liner from the hull covers the access holes i cut in the fiberglass head lner.
