Just bought a 1984 Catalina 27 (subject to a survey)that needs a good cleaning from not being used in a year. What would you use to clean the top side? Like I said it's very dirty. The inside is not bad but still will get a good cleaning too.

I use

Boat Scrub by Aurora products, but you can use Clorox soft scrub, or one of those purple cleaners full strength, followed with a complete water washdown. The new Mr Clean "eraser" product will clean up the stubborn spots. Several companies make a wax for the non skid areas, they may help keep the clean decks clean !

Bleach

Get a spray bottle, fill it with 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water, the day before you start cleaning spray all the fiberglass surfaces and walk away. A good prtion of the "stuff" will simply disappear when you come back the next day. Then you can start scrubbing.

Like Bob Said

Only I use a garden sprayer and rinse it off before it is dry. A second application gets it downright sparkely.

Roll Off

I used this and it worked great, so great, I will be looking for more at my local boating store. Pricey, but with a short brush and a little scrubbing those pesky spider and bird droppings seem to just roll off. And it is a lot easier to keep up too. Just my way of doing it. Keep it up, Ctskip

Island Girl Pink Cleaner

A few years back I used Island Girl Pink Cleaner with scotch guard handled brush and it got all the bad marks and real and real tuff dirt off. I since keep a good two or more coats of wax on. I did not like using their other products but the pink cleaner really worked good to get it clean, just like a machine compounding. Nick

Caution on Mr. Clean....

I have noticed that those handy white pads are VERY abrasive - I think that's why they seem to take anything off. Abrasive isn't necessarily a bad thing unless you're not expecting it. Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

Caustics....

I prefer caustics containing sodium silicate .... dissolves grease, dissolves mildew and fungus, removes air polution 'specks', removes 'old dead' wax, etc. Spray on, let soak, re-spray then scrub, then rinse. It will temprarily turn white gelcoat to a 'yellowish color' but is only temprorary and will rapidly fade back to its natural color. Then follow=up with a 'wash' of oxalic acid (hardware store/ paint store - 'wood bleach') to remove any stains from tannin and iron/rust staining. ........... also will remove the 'grey' from bare teak. Commercially available 'brands' would include "Tuff-eNuff" (about $9.00/ spray bottle) ... sold in many marine chandleries. Tuff-eNuff is a VERY good detergent for goats .... also good for removing interior mildew, etc. as it *dissolves"/liquifies the mildew cells. Once the interior is cleaned, simply spray on and let dry to prevent subsequent mildew growth. The oxalic acid is 'generic'.

2nd on island girl pink

My C27 sat in the parking lot for two years. Saturday, I pulled the tarps off and a friend of mine and I scrubbed her down with Island Girl pink diluted 4oz per gallon. Removes dirt, old oxydation, streaks, tree sap nicely with just a regular wash brush, and sometimes a bit of elbow grease with a rag. Great cleanup stuff. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake
