I recently installed a charger to my boat and wired the ac/120 directly into the shore power master plug back, piggy backing it into the plug with the three ac wires. It does not generate any heat and everything works but not sure about the long term effects.

Fire waiting to happen!

"Piggybacking" as you say will tye your power source to either the 30 amp/50 amp shore power breaker. This is a fire waiting to happen. More than one booat has been sunk by the breaker capacity being larger than than the circuit wiring. I strongly suggest that you place a "charging" breaker after your on board shore power breaker. At the very least you should tie into the output of one of the branch breakers (port, starboard, etc.)
