AC wiring question

Does anyone have an wiring schematic for the 120v electrical panel on an ODay 34? I'm installing air conditioning and wanted to tie it into the existing panel, but it seems like the previous owner got a bit creative with the wiring there. I'm considering running wiring from the existing shore power input to a dedicated switch/circuit breaker rather than to open a can of worms by trying to adapt the current wiring (which seems to function just fine).

I don't have one but I would be interested in what you come up with. I'd like to install Air Conditioning in my Oday 35 next year. Nigel Calder's Manual is always a good resource. How many BTU's did you decide on and what brand did you choose? Where are you installing the unit? I'm thinking it will go in at the bottom of the forward hanging locker. I installed the thru-hull already but it is capped off until I'm ready for the rest of the installation.
It seems like you could use a 12000 btu unit but some manufactures seem to recommend 16,000. I also would like it to be a reverse cycle so I can extend the season.

A/C for O'Day 35

Well, I'm getting ready to put a 16,500 BTU with reverse cycle from Mermaid Manufacturing (http://www.mmair.com/marine_division/air_conditioning/16_500_btu_system). Looks like the locker is the place. Hate to lose the space tho. It will fit under the V-beath but, don't think I can run the duck work the proper way to get the best air flow. As far as the wiring goes I plan to put a panel in just for the A/C. Going with 220v, uses less electricity.

Hope this helps. If there is anyone out there that has A/C on there 34 or 35 please let us know.

We have a 272 LE and installed a 12,000 btu Mermaid....very difficult installation due to size of boat...
We put in a dedicated 20 amp circuit just for the Mermaid.....

by the way...12, 000 btu's will not cool our boat on a summer afternoon in Kansas.....nightime is good...In the daylight, the unit never shut's off and it just freezes up. evern with everything sealed and covered (i.e. hatches) and acess to the bilge areas. We should have bought 16,000 btu's....the large open area under the cockpit (quarter - berth) heats up and there are just too many open areas that cannot be closed up. The mermaid unit is quiet, and the pumps, etc. of excellent quality....

good luck....do the separate circuit and at least 16,000 btus.....In your boat I would consider more as the cost and size differences are irrelivant after all the hard work installing... but then again, your area doesn't get nearly so hot.

I think you right about the 16000 btu's. I heard that Beneteau was installing 12000 btu units in their 34's but has changed to 16000 in the last couple of years. They must have been getting complaints.

Knotagain, how are you doing 220 volt? Aren't most dock side circuits 110v?

Well, I talked to the dock mgr. before I order and they have the power. Got the unit in last week and plan to start the inst. this week end. Know I will not finish this weekend but hope to get unit in and ducking run. The main duck will be on the locker wall (6") and will run 4" to v-birth and head. Then elc. the next weekend. Will have to pull the boat to do the plumping and will try to put new rudder in the same time. Will let you know how it goes with photos.

How are you running a duct to the head? You are installing the unit in the hanging locker directly accross from the head, right? Is there enough room to go under the floor?

Duck work

Hi Rajhnsn, I hope to run it under and around the V-berth with a vent in the berth. Yes, it's going the the hanging locker. Starting this week-end.

Duct Work

I have a 16500 BTU Reverse Cycle A/C in our O'day 35. It works well, though it can get a little overwhelmed in the peak of the Washington DC heat. I Highly Recommend using the largest duct work possible. We originally had a 4 inch duct running into a T and then into both the V-berth and the main cabin. It could not keep up with the demand. I have since split it into a 6 inch duct right into the main cabin (our unit is mounted under the port side settee with the pump and through hulls in the wet locker,) and the 4 inch line into the v-berth and up high in the main cabin. It keeps the cabin around 80 degrees even in the 100 degree heat we have been having here lately.
