i'm looking to install an ac unit in my hunter legend 35.5. we have decided to locate it under the v-berth next to the water tank. the depth is 12.75 and thw newer units have been made smaller to fit. any sugessions so far! i will run 6' flex to the aft cabin, two 4' flex to the salon and one to the forward cabin. the return will be right behind the v-berth bulk head. we considered under the nav center, but it seemed to require more custom detailing. the bit question is what to buy. here are the choices. units and approx. cost unit only (12,000 btu)all reverse cycle heat. cruise air 2200 aqua air 2200 marine air 1800 artic air 1500 (include teak kit and water kit) mermaid 1400 king air 1500 i'm not shopping for price, but nor due i want to spend more than i have to.

Hunter 33.5 Saint Louis
16,500 BTU

Several of us have used FlagShip Marine. Ours is 16,500 BTU's of Air Conditioning with electric heat. We have a 1993 H33.5 and the nights in the summer are terrific but it loses ground on those 90+ degree days. I know you shouldn't go to large but don't short change yourself. Jeff

Go to...

the "Boat Info." tab and click on "Model info". Then scroll down left side to 35.5 and click on that. Over on right side of page under "boats for sale" is a photo forum of projects. Check out "custom A/C installation" for some other ideas. You will find that 16000/16500 btu is MINIMAL size for your 35.5. Do NOT go too small. Also, locating the main unit more to the middle of the boat will cool the WHOLE boat better, otherwise the aft cabin will never cool off.

19,000 btu's

I put a 16,000 btu in the starboard settee of my 35.5. It wont cut it when the temperature goes above 95 degrees. At 100 degrees outside, the cabin is 85 degrees. You need at least 19,000 btu's if you are using a single unit. Go to 35.5's in the picture portion of archives and you will see my project.

Dutchess...

Jim and I are talking starboard side, just forward of the nav. station. The photo article I referred you to is his. I checked out the Flagship site and they have a new low profile 18000btu unit that I'm seriously going to look at for my 35.5. I included a link to their website below. Don't know where Moorestown is but in Texas or Fla., 16-16500 won't get it!

Marine Air Systems

has a 18,000 btu that has a ebm high capacity blower. The dimensions are 15.50"H, 21.00"W, 13.00"D to see it go to www.marineair.com and click on self-contained. They also have a 16,000 btu low profile that I believe is only 8" tall.

thanks guys, when i sent this out for bid, they wanted to move the heater and compressor, then install in front of the galley sink. my mind was pre-set that you had done the same. however i like this idea better. i think i will get either the king air or flagship in the bigger units. as for ducts, it was suggested to install under the nav center with some type of built in. the plenum will go aft with one 4' and forward with two 4' for the salon and one 2' for the v berth. second chice is 1 6' from the plenum with 2 4' supplies from a single run.

Now you're ...

on the right track! There was a guy in the Dallas area on a lake who does a lot of Hunters and he puts his main unit under the nav. station on a specially built base. Very nice/clean install. Didn't have a kit for 35.5 last time I looked, but was working on one. Sorry that I cannot find the website at this moment.

Aft Duct

I ran a duct under the nav station, through the head area and into the aft cabin. The area under the nav station would have been exposed, so I had the cabinet makers cover it.
