I am trying to determine the BTU requirements for the twin aft cabins. The PO replaced the main salon / fwd berth unit with a 16k Dometic turbo that does a nice job. The rear unit, a 10k BTU Lunaire is over 20 years old and hasn't worked since I bought the boat last year. I saw a nice 7k BTU unit by Mabru that fits the budget. Dometic also has an 8k unit for a little more and a 10k unit for a lot more (not the turbo). I am just wondering if I can use the smaller 7k or 8k units. or do I need to go up to 10k like the PO had originally. I'm trying to keep this project on budget ; the aft unit would most likely be used only at night.

I have an aft 8,000 BTU Cruiseaire (Dometic). It easily cools the one aft cabin and is also ducted to my galley. Frankly we only use it when we have guests in the aft cabin or I am whipping up a big pan of paella in the galley. If I ever replace it I would make size a priority. The thing crowds access to my stern compartment and rudder tube.
