Greetings all, I finally broke down and purchased ac for the boat and have some questions regarding installation. It's a 16.5K btu mermaid that I plan to put under the head sink. Plumbing question: Plan on teeing off the head sea-cock (temporarily until the next haul out) and need to run 5/8 hose to the ac, can I cut into the side of the bildge at this location and run approximaely athwartship to the ac location? I know some here have found extra space under the floors, any knowledge in this area? Well I'm off to Home Depot before they close, I'll save the ducting question for later. Really appreciate the help, Ken DeLacy

Can't help much Ken, I put mine in the cabinet in the q-berth. But I would 'T' off the engine thru-hull if I were you. It is closer and you likely will not be running the engine while the A/C is running. If you use the head thru-hull did you plan to have them both open at once? Not sure how that would work with the A/C pulling the water out of the toilet. Otherwise you would need some sort of check valve. Or have to turn off the A/C when you wanted to flush. On mine I have a ball-valve directly on the engine thru-hull for on/off. Then an elbow to a 'T' ball-valve, one side to engine and other to A/C. All the plumbing(filter and pump) is in the next bilge section forward of the thru-hull. From there it should be easy to get to under the sink. I only had to drill one hole, for the outlet water, right in the middle of the bootstripe. I did not run any duct work. Mine blows into the salon and cools the whole boat. I mounted the thermostat in the q-berth. I use a fan to direct air from the sink area to the q-berth or it gets too cold in the salon and v-berth before shutting off.

I installed AC T'd off head intake

3 months ago I installed a ArcticAir 16,000 btu in a custom box below the Nav table. I installed a T at the head intake, then an in-line raw water filter, and ran hose down the bilge to the water pump. The pump was mounted to one of the cross pieces in the bilge near the galley. I can flush at the same time the AC is running without any problem.

I teed off the galley sink drain which has worked great for me, just have to be careful what you put down the drain while a/c is running. It was the closest thruhull as I put a Mermaid 12k in the port side vbirth storage compartment. One nice thing about this setup is I can turn on my water faucet at the sink shut the truhull and flush the water cooling system on the mermaid with fresh water before shutting it down. Install almost finished

Did t off the head intake and put a check valve in on the head end (thanks Ed). No problem routing from there to the head sink beneath the floor boards. A friend suggested I put small peices of chlorine tablets into the raw water strainer to avoid barnicles glowing in the ac. Said he used a large tablet first and it desolved the metal mesh in the strainer, but then switched to small pieces and never had barnicals again. Any info on this? Also the breaker mermaid included doesn't seem to fit the breaker panel very well, other mermaid installers here experience this? did you buy another type of breaker? Should fire it up tomarrow, can't wait! sleeping outside is no fun when it rains off and on 4 times a night! Thanks again, Ken DeLacy

Now I understand!

This whole time I thought you meant the galley sink. So the head takeoff makes more sense now. The circuit breaker that came with my Mermaid was a perfect fit in my '79 panel. There were two empty holes on the AC panel. My marina also has them in stock, they seem standard. I added a white DC CB the other day for my Nexus instruments. Maybe you have an upgraded panel? The forward sink is a good location but I didn't take serious measurements there. I do remember that Carl Wood on Adventure put his there. It's a good location because you can easily duct to the salon and v-berth. Enjoy!!

Above the Head

I put my Mermaid unit in the cabinet above the head. It ducted easily to the V-berth and the saloon after I went to LOWE'S and bought an aluminum 6" Tee that was 4" shorter than the one supplied by Mermaid. The louvered teak cabinet doors provide adequate air intake to the unit. My boat had an unused intake thru hull near the engine water intake so I did not have to tee into another intake. I do not, however, like the long plunbing run from the pump to the AC. Please let us know how the tee into the head intake works out. I might want to change my set up.
