One of the first things I'd like to add to my new H-320 is refrigeration. I may not be right away, but I would like it to be A) a do it myself type project, B) a "Kit" that would include all the necessary components as I've never done anything like this before and C) I think I would be best served by a unit that would work off shore power most of the time but still run on DC when I'm out for the weekend or a bit longer. In the past I have mostly daysailed, but hope to venture farther and longer in the new boat. Which units would you recommend for the above list of requirements? What does Hunter install at the factory if I had chosen that option? And are these AC/DC units small enough to go in a Hunter 320 easily? Also, I would prefer air cooled as opposed to putting another hole in the boat (I'm not in the tropics by any means!!) Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Norcold...

..is the only brand that I'm aware of that operates on both AC and DC. Ther may be others. My unit defaults to AC when I'm connected to shore power. Some units will continue to operate directly off of DC power (even when plugged in) and require you to leave the charger on at all times when connected. This also means that you must ensure that you check battery fluid levels often because there is always a draw from the batteries. (This also assumes that you will be leaving your fridge on all the time, as many people do).

Stand up or convertable?

Several manufacturers make AC/DC standup fridges, do an internet search for Norcold, Novakool (or Novacool), DC Planet, and Sunfrost. Most convertable kits are straight DC. However, the are fairly low draw (3-5 amps) so your battery charger will have no problem keeping up with them when you are plugged in.

ac/dc units

Hunter installs at the factory their part number 251216. This is the standard ColdMachine with a small vertical mount evaporator. The differance is the tubset lenth is only 8' long. This is a dc unit that runs off your battery charger at dockside. Keep it simple! You can call Hunter for pricing. WAECO Adler/Barbour also makes stand up fridges available in dc or optional ac/dc.

West Marine now carries the Adler Barbour Line!

Check out the big 2001 West Marine Catalouge. It has the complete Adler line in there. Prices aren't too bad either. Jack
