My compressor kicks on for approx. 20 sec. then off for 30 sec, back on, then off, over and over. Basically an inhatch window unit 5000btu. Any ideas?

Freon charge could be low and it is cyciling off due to "low pressure" condition.

Mine is doing the same thing. On mine, I can see the digital thermometer drop immediately when it kicks on, causing it to shut off, and then see the thermometer go up a degree or two, causing it to cycle on. I have to run it with the thermometer set to 55. As soon as the weather permits, I am going to rip the hanging locker apart to get at the AC and look for corroded low-voltage connections and clean them. If that doesn't work, I'll by a 400$ high-tech controller (fx?) if I can find one for my unit.
By-pass the low pressure cut out switch, which will be on the suction line (the larger diameter line) two wires. If the unit continues to run, it is low on charge. Do not leave the jumper in place.
It may also be running on only the start windings, then kicking out. A hard start kit is available at any ref supply house. Take the specs with You. It is a simple plug and play kit.

It's possible, unit wasn't used much but was a bit abused manhandled into present compartment. I have an identical new unit I will swap out for now as temps are heading back to 100s.
