The ABYC technical reports are the bible of boating maintenance. Everywhere you read, it’s “Make sure to do the wiring per ABYC standards.” Ect. But to get the reports (or the CD), you have to be a member. And to be a member, it’s about $200 a year. So if this information is so crucial to maintaining a boat properly, to re-build an old boat to specs, why isn’t the information available for free? Any ideas? Any leads on where it can be had for free. Would just like to know that what I’m doing on my boat would pass an insurance inspection for example. Thx

In fact, the ABYC Standards will initially cost you over $385 the first year, then subsequently $165/year to maintain them. This is not unusual for “professional” standards and codes. ABYC membership start at $165.00/year for business memberships. Designed for marine surveyors, boat yards, repairers, and other marine professionals who do not manufacture a product. As a benefit of membership, members only are eligible to purchase the “Standards and Technical Information Reports” for Small Craft. The ABYC standards are available in three formats at $219 + S&H. * Standards Manual - This large, blue, three ring notebook is a common sight in the hands of marine professionals. * ABYC CD-ROM - This convenient format offers computer access to the Standards and Technical Information Reports for Small Craft and includes the USCG's Rules and Regulations for Recreational Craft, an excerpt from the Code of Federal Regulation. Two optional upgrades may be added to the ABYC CD- ROM: Comparison Reports and the USCG's Compliance Guidelines. * Web-STIR - This internet accessible option includes all the information contained on the ABYC CD-ROM and may be accessed from any location with a DSL or better internet connection You can choose any one format for $219.00 plus applicable Shipping and Handling. You may also pick any two for $379.00 plus applicable S&H or receive all three formats for $499.00 plus applicable S&H. You might be interested in Transport Canada’s online “Construction Standards for Small Vessels” (# TP 1332 E), which covers some of the same ground as the ABYC Standards: http://www.tc.gc.ca/MarineSafety/tp/TP1332/menu.htm HTH, Gord May
