Hi all,
I just looked at a very nice Beneteau Oceanis 430. Overall the boat is in fair shape ( nothing lots of time and money can’t fix lol ) , but I have a question about the rudder.
When I looked the boat over I was able to rock the rudder side to side by a quarter of an inch just where the rudder shaft protrudes from the hull. This seemed excessive to me as there is none of that on my 30’ Laguna. I’m no expert though and don’t know anything about the build of Beneteau boats. Is this normal? If not, what’s it take to fix? Any thoughts on cost?
Thanks in advance for your advice and help

I would first check with the cabling...... may be loose around the quadrant. If you go to the quadrant feel the tightness of the cables. Easily adjusted..

Good luck!

If there is side to side movement of the rudder without turning ,it needs to be dropped and bearing glassed and upper bearing is derlin and a new one will have to be machined ...been there done it. Google beneteau 393 rudder bearing repair that's how myself and buddy did our boats. I removed the rudder and machined a stock the same size as rudder diameter to fit the bearing and epoxy . Then reinstalled rudder
