This article talks about "rogue" waves that caused major water level changes in a matter of minutes. The story is interesting, especially if you were there, but it reminds me of something I saw in May here in Galveston Bay.

We (my two buddies and I heading to Freeport) were sailing down the east side of the Houston Ship Channel. It was probably my twentieth time down the channel and I've been down in all kinds of conditions. This time though was different. The day was a nice sunny day with about 10-15 knots coming from the SSE and we were pointing SE. The sea state was maybe 1 foot at max. I was at the helm and my friend said "what's that" as he was looking behind me. His eye sight isn't that good so I didn't think much of it as I turned around but low and behold, there was an 8' wave about 200 yards behind us and catching us pretty fast. It was wide, starting a hundred yards east of the channel and going all the way to the east side of the bay. Behind it fallowed two other waves, about 5' and 4'.

The boat just floated over it as it passed so that was cool. My first though was, wow...that was a big bow wave as the ships make 2-3' waves with their bow. As I though more, I had realized it wasn't a bow wave. First, the wave was going a lot faster then any ship out there as we saw the wave pass the ships as it headed all the way to Bolivar. The wave was also at a right angle from the ship channel, not the normal 45 degree angle a bow wave is.

We talked about that wave with each other all the way there and then the following day with the other sailors who made the trip. Turns out we were the only ones who saw it because we were the only ones who was outside of the channel. Nobody believed us.

On the way back we were sailing up the bay in the same area and I was thinking to myself, it would be weird if it happened again. I grab the bi-nocs and looked around. I saw something miles away and it looked different and I thought to myself "no way". 5 minutes later I looked again and this time I said "no way". My friends looked and they said it was something else. A few minutes later it hit us again, this time on the bow. The first wave was only 5' and followed by 4' and 3' but we were ready this time. We filmed a little of it. The recording didn't turn out that great as we used a camera but it was clear evidence something was different.

If I remember tonight, I'll try to find that and post it.

na....no boat or ship caused these waves. They started in an area where hardly any boats ever go, Trinity bay (Northeastern Galveston Bay) as most boats don't want to cross the ship channel. The wave was perfectly perpendicular to the shipping channel to so nothing from the shipping channel caused it. We only have ferries down in Galveston and they are slow. Speed boats all over the place but their wake is 1-3 feet at max and they aren't as steep as this was. This wave was breaking the entire way down the channel (20 miles) and it wasn't breaking because of floor changes as there aren't any where the wave was.

My only guess is that it was caused by some kind of underwater land movement...but so odd that it happened on two days in one weekend (3 day weekend...memorial day) and never before or again and never seen before by any other sailors that I've ever talked to in the area.

Nope...it was going southeast, not northwest (down a river, not up it even though the bay being 5 miles wide at it's narrowest point).

could you inquire at the Coast Guard Station?

Likely they might have heard about it...

Some years ago I was at the mouth of the Chesapeake. I looked off to ocean side - and the waves were all small - may be 1 to 2'. All of a sudden - a wave just ROSE up out of the water.. must have been 20' tall+. then it dropped back down. May be 200-300' off shore.

I guess you just have to keep your eyes open all the time..

Are there any weather buoys in the area that record?

You might want to check Wunderground to see if any movement was recorded.

I would suspect that some kind of seismic activity (or minor tremor) might help to cause this sort of phenomenon you observed. That or volcanic activity in the region but the closest active volcanoes near you would be in Mexico or an island like Monserrat which is pretty far away from you.
The article you linked from Maine was pretty interesting but it did point out that there was the remnants of a nasty low pressure system nearby out on the Atlantic (this system basically sunk a Swan sailboat off Atlantic City, NJ killing 1 crew member). Fast moving intense low pressure systems might create a similar wave effect to occur. They do mention the possibility of an underwater landslide as well in the article.
There are websites for monitoring seismic activity: http://www.iris.edu/seismon/
Very interesting.
Thanks Franklin

Tidal bore

Was this around the time of greatest tidal range?

As for dvideohd's 20'+ waves in the bay, they are clearly noted in the notes section of your map. the bow/stern waves from big ships interact with each other and the shoal in the channel coming out of Baltimore. Something to be avoided as the shoal is only 7' deep. folks report going up really fast then down till they hit the shoal with pretty much dire results.

Franklin, I have seen these waves 3-4 miles from the ship channel on Bolivar Peninsula while fishing an area called the Geo-tube. By the time the wake reaches us the ship is usually in the Galveston channel and out of sight. I know ship wakes can travel many miles, and in calm or near calm conditions they would be quite noticeable. How far off the channel were you?
