I'm tackling the task of bottom painting this year. I purchased a copolymer ablative paint from West Marine that was suggested to my by friends and the salesman at the store. The marina last year used a latex ablative paint. Are these paints compatable? Will a basic sanding with 80 grit and a good washdown be adequate for good adhesion and a good job?

Oil base over water base

By latex, I assune the previous painters mean water base anti-fouling paint. I used to use water base anti-fouling paint, but its lack of popularity makes it difficult to find. I painted oil base ablative over water base ablative with a fairly thorough sanding of the previous water base ablative and obtained good results. There should not be any compatability problems. I think your basic sanding and good wash down will be sufficient to obtain satisfactory results.
