Abeam cleats

Our 1991 P42 did not come equipped with abeam cleats so I'm going to add them mainly as a docking aid. I intend to cut a slot in the toe rail just like Hunter did for the bow and stern cleats. Then mount the cleats in the toe rail just like the originals. This has raised some questions that I hope to hear from other P42 owners, which follow: 1. Is the toe rail strong enough abeam? I intend to use a backing plate. 2. Should I mount them back from the toe rail like I've seen on another P42? If I do this I'll need to add chocks. 3. Will a u-bolt work just as well? I've seen another owner use them but it does not seem to be very robust. 4. Does anyone have a good source (other than Hunter) for these ten inch closed brushed aluminum alloy cleats? Eight inch cleats run about $35 each for closed and a bit more for open. Thanks in advance for your comments. Terry

no need to cut the toe rail

Mount the cleat to the toe rail - there are several options. There are cleats you can buy that mount to rail and fold down when not in use. Check West, et al. They aren't too expensive. My boat came with cleats mounted to L brackets that were in turn mounted to the toe rail with nut, bolt and washer. Seems secure enough for spring lines wben side-to docking and guest lines when in the slip.

Debra, thanks. Good idea. Do you mean ...

check West Marine? I checked with them, but maybe I need to have them look deeper. Terry

Couldn't find it West - try Defender

West Marine used to carry these...but you would get a better price at Defender in any event. See the web site. Note that the picture shows the version which mounts to a genoa or other track. Several versions, make sure you order the one you want....

Terry, (we sure talk a lot) On my web site are

Herrshoff stainless cleats at the bow that are on the rail because they are TWO stud, not bolts. I paid around $20 each (or less) Go here. They are 10". Larger are available. http://www.go2marine.com/main.jsp Depending on the width of your rail, you might have to trim the inside of the casting. They are shown in the bow shots of the windlass. But they look like every other Herrshoff so why bother?

I just ordered two ten inch closed cleats from...

Hunter for $35 each just like the originals. Hunter Service said that the toe rail will support a midship cleat. In fact they added these to later models as standard equipment. I'll let you know the outcome. Terry

slide-on cleats on jib-tracks

I installed 2 cleats that slide on the jib-tracks. I can adjust them if required. Worked well with my P-42.
