Abandon boats, what options does the marina have?

Around here the marina's haul boats, take a chain saw to them, and drop the parts into an industrial tub grinder where they are reduced to dust. Hopefully the bill goes to the derelict owner. Otherwise the cost has to paid by someone, and you know who that is...

It seemsto be a "costs vs" issue. There are waaaay too many hulks laying about our yard. Some are real beauties; covered in algae, lichens and mold. Others are just old crap.
Had occasion to speak with the opwner of one; and older Irwin "10-4" when working on my boat this Spring. She's been sitting on the hard in the samespot for a lotta years. He told mehe hadn't bbeen down to see her for 6 years ! Prior tolay-up, she had a ne coupler, shaft and prop; lotsa otherr work, and when last in the water, alll her ghear was operative. Really, all she needed was running rigging and a good power wash!

"Wanna buy a boat"?

No thanks, too many projects of my own; but for what it costs to store her,why not give her a weekend of love...bottom paint and a wash job,and stick her back in the water? Recommended he get a "dry" survey tthen plop her in. Thataways, at leastsomeone could take her for a test-sail?

I believe that in some cases, the owners don;t really want to sell . Once the physical remains of the boat is gone; the dreamof sailing to ?? is over ;)

The rest of 'em??? Costly junk! Sad to say

I'm no expert but I do know this is a problem because I've asked marina owners about them. If they can protect themselves with a contract, they should but I do think marina owners should know this is a cost of doing business. Last I checked no one, by owning a company, is freely entitled to pure profit. One may hope but there is a cost of doing business and marinas know this going in.

I pay, what I feel is a pretty penny to rent water and I know others pay a lot more but that is because of overhead, profit, and dealing with stuff like this.

Are you aware of a state or country that makes it easy to take possession or depose of another persons property?
Every state, county and/or municipality has the power to seize and sell property for delinquent property taxes. Lenders seize and sell property if the loan becomes delinquent (foreclosures). Evicting the occupants is the most difficult part. Boats and cars are repossessed every day.

And the feds can seize property including bank accounts--without a warrant, just come in and take it--if they even THINK you're involved in anything illegal...and it's d'd near impossible to get it back if you're innocent.

:eek:That has to be a gag... Way too much green for it to be real. How? It would have to rain every day to keep that green stuff from drying out.

But it did make me laugh... thnx.:D
I think the joke is on you. It's real.

* Look at the reflection. Every bit of moss is there.
* It's Alaska. It does rain all the time.
* I've had boats that bad moored next to me. One raised several families of ducks before it sank. But the bill was fully paid, they raised it, and towed to the other end of the marina, where it still floats, much the same, 3 years later.
* The next marina down from me there is a boat with a 4' tree growing out of the rail. I need to take a picture.

A basic step that many marinas take is being listed as "additionally insured," often with a clause that they can remove the boat if the insurance lapses. The requirement for insurance limits the POS problem.

It really bores down to this. If, I mean "If" the marina owner(s) knew what they were doing in the fist place and knew how to run a business properly. Then this would not be a problem. It is NOT the cost of doing business ether. It's just they don't think outside-there-box. Most owners become complacent of day to day work trying to make due.
