If you haven't already seen it, I'd like to call your attention to the article featured on the home page of the Hunter Owner site, called "A Visit with Hunter Marine." It was a lot of fun for me to put together and necessarily ended up being a bit long for a web site posting. However, I'll be happy to try to answer any questions you may have that come out the visit and the article. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust H37.5

Many thanks for this article....

Gary, I just finished reading your article about Hunter production and I'll have to admit it brought some raw emotion to the fore. I have enjoyed four Hunter sailboats (well, three actually, one just wasn't my style) and have been defending the building process since the late eighties. I am very envious of your tour of the plant. Someday maybe I'll get to go--I'd like that. I had the chance to meet with Steve Pettingil when he was here in the northwest and I'd buy any boat he was associated with. He fascinated Lynn and I for two hours on boat building construction and theories. I'm a pushover for new ideas. His stories of racing around the world are amazing. Again, thanks very much for your report. I have heard and read such things about Hunter production over the years and it was good to read your article. I have been bashed so many times about my Hunter 380 that I have grown wary of some folks in the harbor. You helped a lot. Have a safe and happy cruise around Vancouver Island. I look forward to your reports when you get back. uniform whiskey Les Blackwell H380 Trumpeter Sailing out of Bellingham and Friday Harbor

Good article

"Other places along the way encounter tidal currents of up to 16 knots." 16 knots of current? Is that possible to cross or run with? I'm sure it's not possible to go against in a sailboat. NEXT QUESTION: I've heard so much about the hull not being strong enough for blue water...but I've yet to hear of a hull collapsing due to stress and am still trying to get somebody to show me a story of one. Any stories? I can see a hatch breaking though and that can be serious. Lots of plexi-glass on my 376 that I would be worried about if I had 15' breaking waves hitting the glass.

Franklin

Hi Franklin, Thanks for your comments, and I'm glad you enjoyed the article. The currents of up to 16 knots occur in narrows where large bodies of water are being pulled or pushed through by the tide. This means every six hours or so, they slow down, come to a brief halt and then reverse themselves. The brief period during which the tidal current stops is referred to as slack tide, and that's when you run through these narrows. With respect to your other question, I'm not aware of any documented stories of hull failure. On the other hand I wouldn't be anxious to test my boat or any other against the power of 15 foot breaking waves! Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust H37.5

Great Report, Gary

I was just in Vancouver Friday, having taken a cruise from Los Angeles, CA. Lots of sailing area there, lots of coves to tuck into, and really pretty. Lucky people. I noticed the wake being left by the (stationary) channel markers, and assumed the current was some kind of nasty, as you have confirmed. Vancouver Yacht Club looks like a great place to visit. BTW, we had a nice trip, seas easy, 15-20 knots wind all the way up except for Point Conception where they were 6-8' with a short duration and 25 knots wind (actual). I was expecting some slop north of San Francisco bay but it wan't bad. Lots of whales. Rick D.

Excellent Gary!!!

I've been waiting to hear about your trip and I must say, no surprises! Very well written and I feel very accurate portrayal of the "Hunter mindset". I feel like they give us an awful lot for the money we pay and it's up to us to ready our boats and ourselves for whatever our intended use may be. That being said, whoever decided to put an aluminum holding tank in my 35.5 ought to be dragged out and horse whipped!!! Thanks Gary.
