We would like to sail out to Fire Island this summer form our homeport in Raritan Bay. Can anyone give us some information on the area? We would like to anchor and dingy ashore if possible. Are there good areas to do this from? We draw 4 ft. We don’t mind walking and may take our bikes with us. I hear there are nice board walks and beaches. I am particularly interested in seeing the Lighthouse and Sunken Forest areas, but any other suggestions would be appreciated

Great South Bay

You can anchor off Kismet, and its an easy walk to the Lighthouse. However, there can be a fair bit of current and boat traffic there. Better off docking at the Kismet marina. The cost to dock overnight is $60. But, you get $60 credit at the Kismet Inn restaurant on food and drink. The closest marina to Sunken Forest is Sailor's Haven. Its packed on the weekend. A bit tricky to get into. Alot of shallow water (but the bottom is soft). Anchoring is easier. Some communities on Fire Island restrict bicycle use in the summer. You could post your questions on this Long Island powerboat forum for more local knowledge. http://www.boatered.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=25 Enjoy your trip. Sailors Haven

Cindy, Check your charts if you anchor west of the first bouy entering Sailors Haven you'll have no problem with depth, do not venture to far south of the first bouy as it gets shallow fast.I have a 32 ODay with 3'6" draft and I anchor there all the time. Also nearby Kismet is Atlantique marina for $60 non resident or anchor right next to it if full on the east side of the marina and dingy in.

Go East!

Cindy, I grew up on LI and have spent quite a bit of time on Fire Island. I would suggest further East like Watch Hill and Davis Park. Kevin

East is good

Cindy, Davis park is ok but you have to anchor out and its very shallow, I'm not 100% but I was told the marina was for Brookhaven residence only, no non residence,Watch Hill is a great place if there's a slip available, follow the bouy chain into Watch Hlll with a lot of caution stay in the center.

If you vant to be alone

go way East in Great South Bay to a place called "Old Inlet." It was once upon a time an inlet that some storm or other closed off from the sea. There is a rudimentary dock there and a parks department shelter which I believe has showers and the like though it has been some years since we have been there. Drawing four feet you should have no problem so long as you don't cut the buoys. The desrted ocean beach is just over the dunes and the clothing optional beach, if you're interested, a short walk further east on the ocean side. Coordinates for the dock are N40 43.55 W72 53.79. There is a surprising amount of "official" vehicular traffic on the beach and may include rangers on horseback.
