Yes, Long Island has is special places (Peconic Bay) - my boat can be seen anchored along with our ride in on the beach.

How far was anchor to the shore? Seems far to me, judging from the picture, but then it could be shallow too.
Nice picture.

Judging from the height this photo is taken from, I'm guessing that this photo was taken from the Roses Grove area or maybe Sebonic. Both beautiful. But the very best features of Peconic Bay are the reliability of the sea breeze and the uncrowded waters. While sailing in Shelter Island Sound entails hanging on for dear life as you hit one enormous wake after another, in Peconic Bay on a weekend there are usually few boats.

Hunter 36 Punta Gorda
peconic

I remember sailing out in the Peconic during 2001 to about 07 before moving my bigger sailboat to Greenport.
Where is that nice beach.

We were anchored about 1/2 mile off the beach in 10 feet of water -- Yes it is the Roses Grove area...my kids call the dunes "Donkey Dunes". On the Peconic Bays chart its directly South of Nassau Point / Robbins Island area. Just a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Elevation must be around 300-400 feet or so.

Hunter 36 Punta Gorda
remember

Ok I remember now and really enjoyed sailing around Robins Island many times from Riverhead where we kept our Hunter 290 in Reeves Creek next to Larry's Light House Marina.
When I moved up to Our H-36 which draws 4'10 it was hard not to run aground in the entrance to Reeves Creek( good friend John Reeves had a dock behind his house) and so we moved to Greenport which was a fantastic place to have a sailboat and we retired in 07 and sailed all over to CT. and Block Island and many east end spots.
We had 2 great years out at Greenport before moving to Florida,it may be a shorter season here on LI but really great sailing and we really love sailing west coast Florida but wish we could have a sailboat up here which we spend 3 months during the summer in our Motor Home.
Another few weeks and we will be sailing again in Florida, was on the new London ferry a few weeks ago and was killing me watching all the sailboats out
on the water.

It's a pretty picture and it looks like a high point, but the highest elevation in that area on Long Island is just about 100' above sea level.

Believe it or not, the highest point on the entire Atlantic seaboard south of Maine all the way to the Yucatan is at Atlantic Highlands, NJ at just 266' above sea level.

For those of you on the west coast, that sounds pretty paltry, doesn't it?

Judging heights is often very difficult when you are looking down. I remember climbing the Beehive trail in Acadia and thinking that we must be way more than 1000' above sea level. It turns out that it is less than 600' ... less than the vertical of our tiny ski area in New Jersey. It was hard to believe.

There are some rocks over there -no? Any tips to avoid?
Great King of the Hill territory for kids. Friends in Mattituck say anchor there if you want to read or in RI Cove if you want company. Either is a great afternoon.

Well perhaps it was only 100 feet -- tough to gauge after climbing it with the kids (chasing after them).

Seems like a rather sandy bottom and good holding. No rocks where we were. Follow your charts. There are a couple of inlets marked nearby but plenty of water on either side.

Well, you were climbing in sand ... you have to climb about 3 or 4 feet to achieve 1!
