After all, you've just finished spring maintenance, which included washing and waxing the topsides, cleaning the non-skid, and applying new bottom paint. And the teak is glistening. Is this the year you also repainted the waterline and cove stripes? Perhaps even finally screwed up the nerve to try your hand at rolling and tipping some two-part paint on the hull? The old girl never looked better. So what's next? Taking pictures of your beloved boat, of course! How often do you do this? Do you manage to take pictures of your boat only on the hard or in its slip? Are you lucky enough to have a friend to catch some action shots of you at helm under full sail? If so, do you use a disposable, digital, or camcorder -- or all of these? Once you have all these shots of your boat, what do you do with them? keep at least a disposable on the boat and then usually have a digital in the boat bag. Generally, I have found that if I take pictures of other people's boats and share with them, they are more than happy to reciprocate and take pictures of my boat. I've used photos of my boat to 1)make "boat cards", they're like business cards, 2)I've blown them up to decorate my office back when I was working, 3)I've also used them to make Christmas and/or greeting cards. Nothing handy to post so I'll have to do something about that!

It takes cooperation
It took me a couple of years to coordinate a picture-taking session for my STARGAZER. A powerboat friend graciously offered to take pics while I was under sail. They were GREAT1 Now I just have to find a way to do it again to get pics of the spinnaker flying! Maybe this year! Bill on STARGAZER

Photo log
When I got my boat I started a photo "log" so that I could keep track of changes, electronics installation,etc. I found it extremely helpful when getting ready to take things apart for winter storage, and then for pre-launch in the spring. I had some specific wiring conditions that needed to be documented, because I just knew I would forget the otherwise simple details over the winter. I also have pictures of the boat in the travel lift slings so that we can verify sling location and cradle position. Stepping the mast is a little tricky, so we have photo documentation of that as well. I have hard copies of the photos that I keep in the owner's manual binder, and I have a photo file on my laptop computer.

A Warning....
...for those who store photos and other important info on CD's. CD's have a shelf life of 4 to 6 years. After that time the readers are no longer able to read the CD. This is a result of the breakdown in the plastic the CD's are made from. If you need long term storage of information you need to use some other storage that is not subject to degradation.
