From "SMALL WINDS AND LIGHT AIRS" published 1977, in loving memory, By Gilbert W. Buffery, Commodore SFVYC. Gil was the poet laureate of our club and the editor of our newsletter and one of the finest people I have known. He has since gone to big regatta.
Race trophies are such pretty things, some shine like gold, some even ring
They cast a thousand in one from one mold, and in a thousand shops they're sold
Where you can buy one for ten bucks, engraved with symbols of good luck
To put upon your fireplace shelf, with none the wiser but yourself
Of course, you know, that that's not done, a ten buck trophy must be won
Since there's no way but to win one, here are some steps you might begin on
First, buy yourself a good fast boat, to do this you can float a note
For fifty bucks or fifty thou, don't fret, you'll pay it off somehow
Next with some other dollars green, you rent a slip for your new queen
And show her off to everyone, a ten buck trophy must be won
Then you must fix her up real fine, with varnish, paint, new running line
And curtains for the cabin cute, and topping lift for you new chute
Ought not to run more than twelve hundred, but it could if someone blundered
Remember too, race entry fees, takes two to forty dollars please
But, what the hell, it's only mon, at ten buck trophy must be won
Now for a race you must have a crew, One, two or three or six will do
To speed you o'er the briny foam, and eat you out of house and home
And swab the deck, and drink your liquor, to get you round the marks the quicker
The ten buck trophy you might get, could cost you more than the national debt
But, what the hell, it's all for fun, a ten buck trophy must be won
But, ah the thrill, oh the elation, after years of great frustration
Of shooting crosss the finish line, FIRST TO FINISH-FIRST IN TIME
When you step up to claim the prize, you are the center of all eyes
And all cheer as you take your grip, on ACCOLADE FOR SEAMANSHIP
Who cares if it's a tiny one, a ten buck trophy must be won
Fair Winds and Full Sails...
