Having a difficult time getting / removing a white scum that is the result of something the has floated on top of the water at my dock. It is mostly on the starboard aft quarter. Started to clean with a citric (Goo-Gone ) cleaner , no work; various other cleaners and paint thinner; no work.. Ended up using a razor blade scraper and very carefully scraped the crusty stuff and finished by wet sanding with 800 grit, then compounding to get back to a gloss surface. I TOOK THIS PIX when I lifted "Getaway" last fall. Have absolutely no clue as to what happened..and why on just this area and not all around. Must have been powerful because it ate the white tape stripe too.. I'll follow with a pix of the boat next to me...

That's what I would say. Someone either used or spilled some white paint in the water next to you. Then the wind may have distributed it.

Paint is / was in fact my thoughts too, but why the eating away of the tape stripe.. Last summer I noticed a gaggle of mallard ducks congregating around my boat always looking for a hand out. Seems they would wanna be between the boat and the dock and out of the sun... And I thought that maybe they were pecking away at the vinyl stripe ,, but could they? Could their bills get under the stripe and pull pieces off?

It may have been some flotsam that washed against the hull and
beat on it for a while. I don't think birds are to blame. Oil based paint does float when still liquid. Yesterday I dropped about a teaspoonful into water in a bucket and stirred it around. It stuck to the sides. Bird poop sinks in the water.
