My 23 year old son shared this with me. He always wears his pfd when on the boat. I'd like to credit his childhood training :). I am not as good with my pfd. After watching this I've turned a new leaf. If by sharing it here one person changes their pfd habits I'd call it a good post.

Good luck.

I have watched lots of videos over the winter by so called expert sailors and I was shocked to see that most of them did not wear PFDS nor safety harness when up on deck adjusting sails in bad weather never mind calm seas. I learned my lesson the first time when i went on deck to put up the jib and i went over the side in a dead calm sea. I was glad my friend was with me or i probably would have been in the news as another drowning. Since then i always wear a pfd and a harness to adjust anything on deck.

We never (almost never) wear our PFDs. Now when we have to go over the pushpit rail to bail the dingy while underway or recover the dingy due to a parted painter then yea we put them on. Or up on the foredeck in seas over 5'...... I think they call this common sense. When sailing at 7.2 knots on flat seas in 90 degrees F sunny weather, forget it! I ain't wearing one cause the risk is so low. I've found the "one hand for you, one hand for the boat" to be more than adequate to keep us from going overboard. Course I have a bigger boat and the movement is not as "robust" as in smaller models. I guess size does matter.
And the advertisement link you posted it just that, and advertisement. Guys who sell PDFs for a living are probably going to only have that view, they have kids to put through college.
