A Smooth Bottom

Boats go back in the drink this week. I noticed how really smooth the bottoms of many boats really feel. I have applied my annual coat of VC 17 and was wondering just how do I make this even smoother. Can I sand the bottom after painting or before. It seems that it will be only a smooth as the paint roller will make it. Looking for tips for next season... Thanks

Good prep is the key to any smooth finish, so you should sand the hull before applying the paint. This is especially true with VC-17, which is very thin. Sanding after painting will simply remove most of what you applied. The problem may be the primer. I used VC-Tar (the recommended primer) and found it didn't produce a very smooth finish with the roller. Glossy, but not smooth. I even tried tipping with a brush, but the epoxy set up pretty fast so it didn't help much. I ended up applying two coats of VC-Tar and sanding after each one to get a smooth finish with enough thickness. After that, the VC-17 went on smooth as silk. Peter H23 "Raven"
