I am currently just an 18 year old in missouri, goin for a medical career if all goes well. I am very ambitious and love the sea. I want to know as much as i can about sailboating. I went one time and it was great. However i have no one to teach me how to sail or otherwise the methods of buying a boat. My family is landlocked and hate the ocean but i am the black sheep. I was wondering if anybody had any ideas about how i could accomplish this feat. You can contact me at joshinator25@hotmail.com i would apreciate any info.

Sail In Missouri

Josh, Take a look at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Do some more research on the net. "One of the best places to sail in Missouri borders its largest state park. Lake of the Ozarks is about 165 miles from Kansas City. The Lake's 1,150 miles of shoreline offer fresh air, clear water, and endless crusing possibilities." www.funlake.com Best of luck, Paul

I hope there are people in your area that can connect with you and hopefully give good advice as to where to go from here. r.w.landau

Which part of Show Me

Josh, are you in SW Missouri? You've got three places to choose from: Lake Stockton (MO), Grand Lake(OK), and Beaver Lake (AR). If you are in SW area, post on the forum of BLSC

Get a windsurfer

Windsurfing is a great way to start sailing and you can probably keep the board in your dorm room. I wind surfed for several years and it is probably the most exciting way to sail. Next choice would be a dingy but then you'll need a trailer etc. Once you graduate from school then when you have time and money get a real boat. But for flat out fun a windsurfer is unbeatable especially when you are young. With a big sail a windsurfer can hit speeds of 20 knots or better!!! And you don't need a big lake. I took my kids windsurfing on a 50 acre lake that was used as a water supply and didn't allow motorboats. Tom

join a sailing club

Search for a sailing club that you can join. We have a boat here in Kemah that takes out a different young crew each time out. Another option, hang out at the docks nearest you. Always room for another crew and once they get to know you, you'll be going out on all kinds of boats. The great thing about both of these options is that you would get to sail a lot of different boats and pick the brains of a lot of sailors. A great learning experience for both sailing and boats. Oh yeah....and no headaches involved such as worrying about the maint cost and so on and that's definately something a college student shouldn't be worrying about. Your going to have so many other worries to deal with.
