Looking for a mid-winter nautical fix? Try reading Paul Garrison's Buried at Sea. It's a very well written suspense thriller, and at least 80% of it takes place aboard a 50 foot sailboat out on the Atlantic Ocean. The author has to be an experienced blue water sailor as the sailing sequences and descriptions are "spot on." I would think a non-sailor might get bored with all of the sailing scenes which makes it terrific for people like us. Highly recommended! Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5

Another great read...

I am curently enjoying a Christmas gift, Seafaring Trilogy by Hal Roth. He and his wife navigated the Pacific in the sixties on a 35' sloop. Makes you really want to get out there. He really seems to capture the human elements of doubts, fears, surprise and sheer joy of sailing.

Buried at Sea

I also have to recommend Buried at Sea. I stumbled on it in the discount section at the book store so had to give it a try. I found it an engaging read with an excellent story and great sailing action. Well worth it.

At the Mercy of the Sea by John Kretschmer

Story of 3 sailors caught in hurricane Lenny in the Carribean in November, 1999. Recommended!

I attended Kretschmer's At the Mercy of the Sea

seminar at Strictly Sail Chicago and bought the book. I read it cover to cover in one night - I couldn't put it down. A great read! -- Scott Fuller O34 Dawn Treader Milwaukee, WI

Sitting Ducks!!

Talk about sea stories?! Here is a real account of a couple (one an assitant editor of Cruising World with her boyfriend) who sail down to the south Caribbean only to get assaulted at anchor by a half crazed native!!! The story deals with the poor medical attention, failed police investigation, a crusty island captain who helps come to the rescue and the rude awakwening of sailors who venture into foreign ports unaware of local conditions! The crazed native known by everyone in this shanty town swam out to the boat with a machete! Its a book you cannot put down and a wake up call to the dangers of cruising. It does have a happy ending.
