A reading suggestion

In 1926 a young widow packed her five small children into
the family's 25 foot motor launch and then spent the next fifteen
summers exploring the quiet bays and inlets of British Columbia's
empty coast. The story she tells is a remarkable one, by an
extraordinary woman. It is full of adventure, gentle courage,
laughter and beauty. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I know this is not
strictly "Vega", but it seems appropriate to mention the book now,
with the NW rendezvous approaching. "The Curve of Time" by M. Wylie
Blanchet, Seal Press, deserves to be considered a classic.

Hi All,

Let me add my hearty recommendation for both this book and another,
written about the same area called "Three's a Crew" by Katherine
Pinkerton. Excellent reading!

Both describe the awesome beauty of the British Columbia inner
passages and were written about cruises made during the 1930's in
motor boats.

In hope of getting up there with a boat of my own, I have purchased a
used copy of the Cruising Chart manual for the area and marked off all
the locations mentioned in both books.

One day...

The "Curve of Time" is indeed a cruising classic. I've read it several
times and have also purchased a book of Cruising Charts for the area she
described and have located all the noted sights from the book. One day I
hope to visit some of them.

'Cappie' Blanchet used to live on Curteis Point, Vancouver Island near
Sidney. From all accounts she was a remarkable woman, mother and one heck
of a sailor.

I also heartily recommend this book to anyone who is considering a cruise in
British Columbian waters. Times have undoubtedly changed a lot of the sites
she visited, but the scenery up there is still, for the most part,
unspoiled.

Another good book about cruising in the same area is "Three's a Crew" by
Katherine Pinkerton, long out of print but occassionally available in second
hand book shops. Both of these books were written about cruising during the
1930's but the descriptions and stories are exceptional reading, even today.

Just by coincidence, I happen to be reading "Three's a Crew" right now. A
very enjoyable book. Will try to find a copy of "Curve of Time."
