Rich, What boat will you be installing this on? I guess radar is pretty much a necessity there on the Maine coast. I have not installed radar on my boat yet but have sailed on a few that have radar. I once made a passage from Bar Harbor to Nova Scotia, and sailed in fog the whole way. The sun came out and fog lifted just as we made landfall at Yarmouth. Radar is very comforting to see other ship traffic while out away from land but it is great help navigating near shore especially in pea soup fog. I prefer to install radar on a support post on the stern, off to one side rather than on the mast. I would use a radome rather than an open scanner array for a sailboat but you can get better target resolution from the scaner array type antenna. Many companies make a radar support mast or you could make one out of aluminum conduit like I plan to do. The mast can be used for multiple purposes, supporting a wind generator or a boom to lift my dingy motor. It should be tall enough to not let the boom block the antenna and tall enough to minimize any electromagnetic radiatiation hazard to persons in the cockpit.. The scanner units are not very heavy, maybe only about 20 lbs. Installation details vary depending on what boat you have. I know I didn't answer all your questions and hope someone else can contribute more. See this web site for radar mounting options and ideas. http://www.scanstrut.com/home2.htm

Very light weight.

My JRC 1000 scanner weighs 4 kilograms according to the manual, about 9 pounds. I made my own tower from much too heavy 3" stainless tubing. I made the bracket for attachment to the transom of 3/16" stainless plate. Then I bought the brackets to attach to the pushpit from Garhauer. If I had it to do over I would buy the whole works from Garhauer. I probably only saved a hundred bucks.
