A question on the traveler in companion way

I just saw the photo of Richard Gottlieb's traveler in the Photo Forum. Looks very cool. It should help reduce the heeling in strong winds. Richard, I have been considering doing this on my H26 but I want to mount the traveler on the vertical - aft surface of that same step. I want to avoid having everyone step on the traveler. Did you think about this? Ideas form others would be great too. Thanks in advance. Jim Loats S/V Grizzly Bear

I don't think that would be wise . . .

I think you may be exchanging and inconvenience for a potentially large problem. By placing the traveler track on the vertical (and I believe curved) surface behind the step to the companionway step, you are placing a very substantial load on the machine screws that hold the track in place at a 90 degree angle. I think that could potentially cause bending of the bolts (and the track) or even shearing of the same. Although not apparent from the pictures, I placed rather large fender washers between the nut and the underside of the step to avoid the possibility of the track being pulled up on a *horizontal* and flat surface.

boom attachment for main sheet

Richard, Where are you attaching the main sheet line on the boom? When we got our boat last year the bail was just about over the step. Wife didn't like this since she was having to go around the line all the time. I moved it back to the end of the boom. Jim S/V Java

I've been thinking about doing it too

Those were nice photos. Rich, where in relation to the traveler did you locate the bail for the mainsheet. I was thinking of placing a traveler on the cockpit floor just aft of where you placed your's. However the blocks would probably scrape against the step up aft of the companionway. Can you put the hatch boards in with the sail let out or do the blocks rub up against it? Thanx in advance. alan (h26)

YA KNOW..............

You respond to a post, but someone presses that submit button first and makes ya look dumb! :^) Jim, my bail was always located at the aft end of the boom. A friend in a keel 260 with the same set up almost took off my son's head with an accidental jybe. So I want to get the sheet out of the middle of the cockpit. The trade off will be reduced access down below but can be partially offset by moving the travelor leeward. alan

Location of Boom Bail

I have a bimini on my 270 so the mainsheet attachment point has been move forward on the boom to about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way out from the gooseneck. It seems to work quite well.

Top OF Cabin

I have thought about putting a traveler on top of the cabin just foward of the opening so when you go below you will clear it with head. On my 26' I raised the top of the cabin apx. 8'' so if I install a traveler i would have use an ext. type to clear the top and they cost big bucks. I thought about mounting it to the plates on the cabin top where the rope clutches are mounted. They have a nice plate them you can drill and tap into for good hold down support. Good Luck ,Harry P.P.
