When I did high end charters, I found the wealthy folks weren't very interested in being lectured on boating terminology. I broke it down to the basics when introducing them aboard.
"That's the pointy end, this here is the blunt end and the bar is downstairs.", the last one being the important one.

It does seem to just go on and on don't it?

Nippers, young boys who nipped - attached lines to the anchor rhode as it was then pulled in . This was a small space which was why they used young (small) boys. Now it means any young lad.
