A Public Service Announcement, Eye Protection!

I'll try not be too long winded about this because as you will understand in a moment I am in a foul mood. I'm writing this while I wait for an appointment with an eye doctor because I have a tiny particle of Silicon Bronze stuck in my eye.

Yes, I wear eye protection when I work with power tools... Especially ones that cut and grind metal. Standard clear safety glasses you can find anywhere... and they work well. I guess. Most of the time.

So, this time (and one other incident about 3 years ago) I was happily working with my safety glasses on and a small particle flew up in face just at the perfect angle to fly between my cheek and the plastic. Maybe it bounced off my cheek or off the inside of the glasses but one way or another it ended up in my eye.

To get to the point, I'm suggesting that anyone working with metal fab tools (and its probably a good idea for just about anything) is to go with a goggle that seals around the eyes so nothing can come up, in from the sides, of from your brow. In the past I've had dust from my eye brows actually fall into my eyes after I was done working and removed my glasses.

Yes, I do have a full face shield... Damn awkward to wear and work in. I used to have a good pair of Wiley X glasses that had clear lenses but had the foam around the edge to make them more like a goggle. Looks like I'll been hitting up e-bay to find another pair of those. I'm done with regular safety glasses that only do the job 99% of the time, because that 1% can send you to the hospital.

Not fun ... I feel the pain!

I've suffered the same malady years ago ... I remember how painful it was until I saw the ophthamologist. I did not suffer any adverse condition. I can't seem to recall the circumstance that caused the accident, though. I do remember buying a pair of Revo sunglasses as a result. Jim McMahon was famous for his at the time.

I have not been a victim of eye issues working with tools.. However, working in the shop, or boat, with saws, routers, lathes, etc i have a pair safety glasses on and i slip a full shield on during actual operation which isnt very long timewise. Oh yeah sometimes a pair of script glasses under all that. Its just not worth it to not periphally protect your eyes. Along the lines of really stupid things happening, i was changing a fluorescent tube with twist connectors and one end got stuck and the tube torqued and literally exploded in my eyes. Quick trip to ER and fortunately no issues. Also ive tried looking up the ISO cert rqmts for the plastic used for safety glasses. Good luck..first you have to pay to get it which in my opinion is stupid. People say that the committees/testing have to be paid for etc etc. Well, the gov and industry have already paid for it...same thing for the aerospace industry. It should be public info.. But thats another thread. I could not get any commitment from the plastics mfgrs as to what they protect against per a requirements doc. The other side of the coin is to use proper setup and usage of tool. Do everything to lower the risk. Its not worth it not to. The same goes for working with chemicals...

Kloudie, you got a lot farther than i did. You managed to find a mfgr to say something. ANSI is what i meant. Not ISO. Have you looked for the actual ANSI document?

After a very painful 30 hours with no sleep I got into the Eye Clinic yesterday afternoon. Using a needle first and then a corneal brush the Doc got it out (95% of it he said). Wants me to come back tomorrow afternoon to follow up as some smaller particles will push to the surface as it heals. Anyway, I feel 100 times better and when I got home at 5pm yesterday I slept for 13 hours!
