A Powerful Question . . .

We are currently lacking diesel power. The PO pulled the Yanmar, am not sure exactly why except that he felt that mounting a Johnson 9.9 on the transom gave him more power than the original GM1 unit. I, on the other hand, like the security of having a propeller in the water all the time, and bearing in mind we plan a few trips to the Bahamas this year, we would feel far more secure with the diesel on board. Anyone out there got an "in" on a good, used yanmar? Or, any other suggestions? Frankly, for our day to day needs, the Johnson is fine. It's just when you're in 4 - 6+' rollers off shore, that I get concerned when the unit pops out of the water. HELP! Neil Smith "Ciao Bella" - 1978 H-27 nsmith@cfl.rr.com

yanmar

I too have an h27. My previous owner had installed a 2gm20.This is a two cyl, more than enough power. I have heard that the h27 is underpowered with a single cyl. Dont have a source for used engines, except to bounce around the internet, or if in S.Fla a free mag called the Mariner. BTW is all the old gear (engine bearers, stuffing box, shaft, prop, cutlass strut, etc) still there? How about muffler, control panel, controls, etc. Try and find another h27 for comparasion. Good luck red

If you took the one in Gear Here...

...and added the Origo 6000 stove also for sale, then used the Merc 3.5hp for sale as a turbo charger and add the Martec folding prop for sale there, you might end up with a heck of a power plant. OR, if that setup doesn't work for you, you can always call Mack-Boring and asked them for used dealers.

Try spinsheet.com

Spinsheet magazine had two used yanmar 2gm's for sail in its March 2000 issue. Try spinsheet.com. Let me know how you make out.By the way... the 2gm is great; I have one in my 80 H-27.

Ynamar 2 cyl gm2 is also a better choise

Neil, I would consider this an opportunity to go one step further and look for a 2 cylinder 18 hp yanmar, why mess with the one lunger, with the 2 cyl. you'll have to move the companionway steps a little foward, but just think of the horse power.
