Went to my boat the other day, noticed the toilet bowl was full, pump it thought nothing of it Went sailing bowl filled up, spilled over yuk! Had holding tank pumed thought everything was fine, no bowl still fills up. I have a graco HF toilet in a 1984 boat.I guess I should just change the head. Is there a check valve thats failing?

Keep the intake seacock closed

Except when the head is actually in use--and especially while away from the boat if you don't want to find it sitting on the bottom in the slip-- and read this thread posted earlier today in the Headmistress forum: http://www.sailboatowners.com/forums/pviewall.tpl?&fno=11&uid=73191640303&sku=2006191094234.25 And forget just about everything you know about toilets and toilet plumbing on land...'cuz they have nothing in common with marine toilets whatever. You'll find the link below useful in understanding how marine toilets work and how to operate and maintain 'em correctly.

Loops

See “Vented Loops” at: cruisersforum.com/gallery/showimage.php?=1523 Install a Riser Loop c/w Strainer between the water intake and the head, a Vented Loop between the pump and bowl, and another Vented Loop on the Bowl Discharge (to holding tank). If you have an overboard discharge, install a Vented Loop on it. http://www.cruisersforum.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=1553

Joker Valve

Joker valve probably needs replacement. They get crudded up and stop sealing.

Rebuild Kit

The rebuid kit for the Groco HF is cheap enough and beats buying a new head (unless you feel it really needs it). It should take you about an hour to do the first time. Just have a large, long screwdriver to ease the job.

we had the same problem

We have a 1985 Raitian II,,,just like the other posts recomend.... First make sure you are pumping enough times to CLEAR the vent loop...ours is a little more that 3' above the head,,,so its 14 times on the pump......and secondly I rebuilt,,,the joker valve was a mess of crud so it wasnt sealing.....luckily ours never overflowed,,,just kept filling up....
