...washed the boat two days ago, and by yesterday, it was victim of at least a dozen direct hits. Seems the spreaders on my boat are favored by the locals. And now that the Himalayan Blackberries are ripening here in the Northwest, the hits leave a lovely, nearly permanent purpose stain. I'm considering installing bird spikes on my spreaders. Anybody done it? Anybody see why this would be a bad idea? I'm figuring the windage aloft would be minimal. DRS s/v Synchrony

But i dont risk fowling a halyard or sail on them. take some monofiliment line and make a x above the spreader it will keep them from landing.

I saw a motorboat with discarded CDs suspended with fishing line. Lightweight and shiney, they shimmer in the slightest breeze. It looks ridculous but apparently it works.

No Need
to go and put spikes up there. A single monofilament line 3" above the spreaders does the trick quite nicely. If they can't land, you're safe. I had the same problem at the beginning of this boating season. After I went up and installed the mono, no more hits!

CD as radar reflectors?
I wonder if those old CDs, or probably AOL software CDs, will reflect a radar signal. If yes, then it is killing 2 birds (pun) with one stone. LOL

We had the same problem last year. Me and my neighbour at the dock are now using a large ( 3 feet) rubber Snake from Toy's R US. We both leave one on our deck near the mast when the boat is at the dock. It is really life like and it looks like a real one... It is scarred all the birds away from our boats. It scarred the life out of some old ladies that were leanning on my boat one day too... It works for Canadian Seagulls (Dam Flying rats ) Good luck ! Mario and Sylvie
