The attached link is to a cute video on youtube.com Its about a guy who has bought a used Beneteau and is moving it from Annapolis, MD to Deltaville, VA. He doesn't seem to know the region very well and does a great travelogue for his excursion. I wish we had more of this kind of stuff on this site. Markdb

Had it happen too

Must be something about the 310 that does this to people:) We closed on a 310 from AYS about 9 yrs ago. There was a dispute between the former owner and marina about the payment for the slip for the season. As we were being put in the middle of it all we decided to pull out the afternoon of settlement. I had never run the boat before nor had I done a thorough checkout of lights, systems, etc. The trip took longer than expected and included running aground, getting caught in the rain and when finally half way into my new slip discovered the guy next to me had one of his dock lines running across it. Mind you it was now 1:30 AM and try as I may I couldn't do anything right due to fatigue. Lot's of lessons learned, no real harm done and we still look back fondly and laugh at our adventure.

It jives with my "stupid enough to be true" theory

He didn't know about tides/currents, couldn't get the sails up in 11 hours with an auto-pilot, could give you the distance and time of arrival to 3 significant digits but didn't notice that there was shallow water there. Went all the way up a river to get fuel when there is fuel at the mouth........ But man can he drive that google map and video! My hats off to him for at least getting out there and doing something but these are the guys that really scare me when I'm out on the bay.

I have dial-up

if he made 9 minutes of video and couldn't sail his boat and read his paper charts he is in the wrong business.

That was real life!

I don't know how many of you guys take off hoping things go as planned, only to be awakened. If this has never happened to you, you have not gone far or not been on a time schedule. It was a shame that he chose to motor it. But, this life is about choices...so I am told. I have had to motor some long legs due to wind and schedule. He was excited that he was almost there. I like going there, the getting there, is almost depressing. He made it but it did sound like he was working that motor a bit harder than he claims. Hey, I am on the hard for a few more months. Would I take that trip today? You bet, motor and all. I am really glad people make videos to watch. You guys can make all the judgement calls you want...are you doing it? I agree with Mark, where is your video? Thanks for the post Mark! Just a thought.. r.w.landau

On the other hand

.. he made it safely into port. I would not assume he was all those other things; he was successful. :) Make th Newbie welcome.

Gilligan lives!

Well he did get the background tune correct! I'm sure the Skipper and Gilligan were more prepared than this guy before they set off on their three hour tour. I wonder who he sold his power boat to? He does have a smart crew though. I wonder how long it took them to drive to meet him at his marina?

Anybody check the weather?

Before we all feel too superior about sailing versus motoring, you might want to check the weather...Looking at the historical data for Thomas Point Light, the windspeeds on the third and fourth of September were less than 5 knots, and often less than three. Ghosting along at a knot or less may be very satisfying but I don't know many folks who would put up with it when just trying to move a boat to a new marina!

There was NO wind

There was a storm that blew through that weekend and it sucked all the wind with it. Annapolis Race Week was going on and I was out there bobbing for about 6 hours. Over 3 days, we only got in 1 race. The worst part was that the water was swarming with jellyfish and we couldn't swim. Markdb

Wow the other video is good

The video "this is racing ,B#tch was very good. Watching some newbie motor his boat around the bay is BORING. Watching a racing sailboat sail around britain is good. Much better sound track too.

Not much wind....

Personaly, I meant that I would still try to get a little more speed out of her by having a sail up while I was motoring...seems like it would be a good way to get some practice!
